Get ready to keep checking for updates on your HTC EVO 4G, everyone. The big one is coming!
According to some leaked Sprint documents obtained by Engadget, the long-awaited and highly-anticipated Android 2.2 update will be rolled out tomorrow, though possibly only to select users given that the official PR announcement that will be issued tomorrow morning will state the update will actually be pushed out next week. Either way, Froyo is moments away!
In addition to the standard 2.2 enhancements, the EVO will also be treated to several extra features like camera rotation in all four directions, new widgets, the ability to use the camera's LED for video capture, and improved 720p video recording.
If you're one of the lucky ones to get the update tomorrow, let us all know so we can try to track you down and steal your EVO until ours gets updated too. Thanks, Will!
Update: And it's official. Sprint will be pushing out the update in waves beginning on August 3rd. If you can't wait to receive the update notification (and who can?), the carrier is actually letting EVO users initiate the upgrade themselves through Settings -> System Updates -> HTC Software Update. Thanks, joepennant & Charles!

It’s like Christmas in July!
My understanding is that doing a manual system update (on 7/30 @ 12 PM CST) will allow it to download and install but it won’t be pushed out to people until 8/2. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I’m going to be hitting the “check now” button like crazy tomorrow at 12 PM CST.
Finally an FM radio update! I wonder if there’s a software/firmware fix for the headphone jack.
http://androidforums.com/support-troubleshooting-evo-4g/112194-htc-evo-has-faulty-headphone-jack-thats-why-your-fm-radio-doesnt-work.html
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…BOY! Happy, happy, happy…Joy, joy, joy
Ren and Stimpy reference NICE!!!
Will root users be allowed to download and install this update without a problem?
4 way screen rotation. Better browser performance, correct? Overall better performance (fingers crossed)
Just don’t hit the History Erase button!
This is great! With all the gloom and doom predictions of Q4 release, this is a pleasant surprise. Hope I can get it tomorrow…whoopee!
Hooray!
Now, perhaps I can finally set the real time clock to the actual time, as one of the changes is to expose this to userspace.
I hope this fixes the 30 FPS cap. Droid X and the new Samsung don’t seem to have this issue even though they have an HDMI output.
Wow! This is a total surprise if the leaked docs are in fact real (Sprint copyright at the bottom still says 2009) and not some faked fanboy images. I honestly didn’t expect Froyo on the EVO until November or December, based on how Sprint stalled for a long time with the Hero and Moment.
Not sure if this forced update dialer trick will work on the EVO, but it worked like a charm on my N1 while I was constantly checking for Froyo:
*#*#CHECKIN#*#* [substitute the letters for the corresponding numbers on the dialpad]
I’m also curious if the handsets that were given out at Google I/O will get the update first, since they are for developers…luckily, mine is from this batch, so I have my fingers crossed!
30 fps cap turned OFF and 2.2 would be sweet for the evo..i would actually consider updating from my full root to the official…or just wait for a nicely cooked rom from the good ‘ol devs with the new build, to be able to add the fps hack

It’s suggested that the plug needs to, in essence, go deeper into the jack. Not so.
As others indicated they get reception by pulling the plug slightly out of the EVO. I was able to duplicate in my test.
It seems the best solution is to use a plug that has two rings, and wire tip and ring1 together.
Where did you read about the 4 way screen rotation? The only thing I read regarding rotation is the following:
“Camera: rotation in 4 orientation”
As far as I can tell, that would only be for the camera.
4 way screen rotation for the browser and other Apps would be great but I don’t think it’s happening in this update.
Yeah, I was expecting nothing sooner than November. Color me surprised. I’ll be sitting out this update until I hear the all-clear from you brave souls first into the breach.
Wow, what a weird thing! You’d think there wouldn’t be such issues with an interface that a couple decades old and on tens of thousands of devices. My EVO hasn’t exhibited any symptoms as described, so maybe I got lucky, but good to know this for future reference.
I use the wireless tether too much–I’ll be waiting until it’s rooted (which hopefully wouldn’t be too long).
As a side question if anyone knows:
I have the original Unrevoked superuser permission “root” which isn’t really a full (custom rom enabled) root. Right now, it’s fine since it enables the wireless tethering app, but if I wanted to go to a full root, and NOT lose all my programs, is there any way to do that?
As a side note, isn’t anyone a little scared of this item:
“4G MACID Verification Enabled
This will prevent 4G Hotspot without the HOTSPOT SOC”
It might just mean Sprint is going to prevent users from sharing the Hotspot app or something.
But it could also mean that they will install something that will check if you have subscribed to their (frankly usurious, given that you’re paying for the bandwidth anyway) $30/mo hotspot “option” and disable, possibly, hardware if you don’t have it.
Who knows. Kinda worrisome, though.
Its official, the Engadget page has the Sprint press release:
The award-winning HTC EVO 4G just got that much better. We are excited to announce that beginning the week of Aug. 1; Sprint will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 upgrade to its HTC EVO 4G customers.
For those who just can’t wait to get Android 2.2, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade. Customers can access the software update through their HTC EVO 4G under the Settings Menu System Updates HTC Software Update. This will initiate the three-step process also.
And here’s the official link…

Hmm, and here I was just dragging my feet regarding the last OTA & just installed it today while sitting ay a Sprint company store (not reseller). Didn’t turn into a brick, which is good since my laptop took a dive off the table last wknd & hit the ground hard. LCD screen not happy, neither was the corner hinge. But with warranty that covers accidents, it will soon be as good as new. So I’m depending on my EVO even more fore the next week or 2.
I’ll sit back til you guys say its working ok…

Battery.
We need better battery management.
SPRINT’s official FACEBOOK account posted that the EVO will receive FROYO on August 3rd a couple hours ago.
Did I just die an go to heven? Omg I soooooo can’t wait.
Woot woot! Nothing like a spoonful of AWESOME to start the wknd! Uck-fey the acebook-fey atus-stey… I’ll be too busy stalking the xda site for the rooted Froyo-for-real.
I noticed that too but Sprint confirmed this rumor and froyo should be rolling out on Tuesday august 3rd
Maybe I’m reading it the wrong way, Boygenious “4-point orientation rotation” which I guess could be the worthless camera icon/button thing.
Now I’m trying to figure out why I’m happy? A sideways home screen? What the heck is froyo going to give us?
It’s actually already linked in the post, but here’s what Froyo is giving us: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/what-htc-evo-4g-gets-from-android-22-froyo-update.html
Anything yet?
I read that HTC is also adding iTunes sync, I wonder if we can expect this on the EVO. It might be a nice way to combat what Droid Does not.
Does anyone know if a full backup will be required for the update? I have a non-rooted phone.
I don’t get what the big deal is for the 30fps cap. Usa broadcast standard is 29.97 fps. I understand hd is 59.94 fps, but hell most t.v. hd channels don’t even do 59.94. It all usually gets squashed down to 29.97Fps.
Manual update doesn’t work for me…
1119 cst KCMO-NO update yet
So has anyone been able to do the update? I’ve been trying since noon CST but it keeps saying:
“Your phone is up to date. There are no updates available for your phone”
I’m going nuts over here, I want my Froyo!!!
12:18 CST (7/30) no update available yet
Has mashing “check for updates” actually worked for anybody yet?
1:35 PM ET nothing yet.
Can anyone recommend a good Backup App? I want to backup my EVO before doing the update.
Zinger–it looks much much nicer. The human eye can easily differentiate between 30 and 60 fps. Compare it to an iPhone or an unlocked-fps current Android phone–everything looks much more smooth and responsive. We’re used to 30 on TV, but that’s really no reason for HTC to lock the Evo down to 30.
(Especially when the only justification is that the HDMI needs a 30 fps output. Who has actually used the HDMI output? Why not just lower it to 30 when the HDMI is active? It seems pretty silly.)
benodiktine, Astro or Smartguard are backup utils you can use.
@Gallop – Actually, the new Samsung phones do not have HDMI out.
@Evonator: Thanks!
BREAKING NEWS!!!
In an answer to a facebook question asked by facebook user Lonnie Ward, a Sprint Rep. said “Client initiated update (aka manual download) will be available this weekend (8/1).”
http://www.facebook.com/sprint?v=wall&story_fbid=415432718510&ref=mf
This is in keeping with the date leaked by Engadget yesterday. Facebook comments have been proven to be false in the past, though, so I would be cautiously optimistic about the 1st. The 3rd seems more likely to me (user can initiate update before getting notification, which officially starts on the 3rd but will run through the middle of the month), but we will find out soon!
is the htc UI still gonna be on there after the update?
Grr, msg: “Your Phone is up do date…” yeah, yeah.. I know. All in all, this is really cool. I didn’t think this would happen until January 2011. Frankly, I’m surprised Sprint/HTC pulled it off, way to go!!
Ok so here’s something that seems strange…
Sprint even has it on their official site that it was released today, and usually they don’t jump the gun and post things like this unless it’s been released already (normally it takes them a day or two to post things like this).
http://support.sprint.com/support/article/Find_and_update_the_software_version_on_your_HTC_EVO_4G/case-wh164052-20100527-115429?&INTNAV=SU:DP:HDIA
Anyone get the update yet? I tried to force the update but it hasn’t shown up yet.
Someone on engadget posted they were able to update but who knows if they really did or not…
I just posted this in Jenn’s newest story on the front page:
—————–
Check this out!
http://twitter.com/unrevoked
They have posted a link to what looks to be the official HTC manual upgrade file, to go from 1.47.651.1 to the latest, 3.26.651.3
Enjoy!
… ah, August 3rd.. this is your 12th update!/// guess your information is any better than mine.. it’ll get here when it gets here.. lets just go with that!
