See that? It's Android 2.1 (Eclair) running on my Dell Streak (UK O2 version)!
It's a newer build (6941) than the one we saw in Engadget's demo last week and is said to be the latest one available. It is probably not the final version that is expected to be released next month, but it's certainly better than what's on the Streak right now.
All you need to do is download the .apk available through various links in this MoDaCo thread, rename it Update.pkg, transfer it to the root directory on the Streak's microSD card, hold the volume up and down buttons while turning the device on to boot into recovery mode, and select option 2. Then just sit back for a few minutes while the Streak does its thing. Before you know it, it boots back up with that sweet Eclair slathered all over it.
I heard that this doesn't work on the unlocked UK Streak, so I don't know how it will fare on the AT&T unit. Mine is being delivered today, though, so I'll find out soon. [Update: How to get Android 2.1 on AT&T Dell Streak]
Thanks, ANON!
The date is incorrect in some of the pics because I didn't set it manually or turn on WiFi for it to be set automatically.
In addition to the improved benchmark scores and snappier performance, what I like best about having 2.1 on the Streak is that double-tap zooming is supported in the browser and the URL bar scrolls up with the rest of the page. Live wallpapers, compatibility with a lot of apps that don't support 1.6, voice search, and other goodies inherent in Eclair don't hurt either!

Hopefully my streak comes in today so I can try.
Hey i just got my streak today, wanted to know if I update to the leaked 2.1 version will my stuff get erased?
and also since i have already rooted it i wanted to know when the actual 2.1 update rolls out can i update to it since i have root and the leaked 2.1 version?
Yes, this wipes the device.
You’ll be able to get the official update (whether OTA or through other means – I don’t know how O2 or whoever will handle it), but installing it will break the root.
do want!
Maan, I love this website.
Is there any software way to unlock streak yet? Which one, O2 or AT&T, is better for that if I only want unlocked one?
hopefully it will work for any streak cause i want this on my att one.
this is sweet i was hoping this would leak
Has anyone tried this on one of the beta units in the US that Dell gave out for testing? Would be nice to see if this upgrades it with no problem since they are both AT&T and T-Mo compatible.
Wouldn’t wiping remove the lock as well? Or does that involve a change of the information on the actual sim card?
Jenn you’re tha bomb. Thanks for all of your information. You should go work for Dell. Head of marketing?
Expecting mine any day now. Thanks again.
Update done , what an improvement . I have an 02 locked UK device and upgraded this morning.
It first glance its is allot smoother i wouldn’t say any faster but the animations between screens are very smooth which certainly improves the feel and gives the impression of speeding things up.
In still playing and installing apps at the minute but its safe to say i’m impressed so far.
Good lookin’ out! Let us AT&T folks know if the root works ASAP!
Can you just take out the SD card and update, then put that back in.
I bought last week a Streak in Germany at the Media Markt shop. It is unlocked and i use it with my provider in The Netherlands (T-Mobile at the moment). I like it to use a 5″ screen. Coming from a G1 where i always use the keyboard i try to get used on the virtual keyboard. Furtherone i have some concerns about batterylife. But overall very nice smart tablet phone.
My question: Can i use this to upgrade my German Streak or do i got all kind of O2 stuff ?
Thanks for answering and Jenn thanks for this site and forum.
I am in the US and ordered yesterday at the Dell presale. I would love to get the 2.0 upgrade but I am far from tech savy so can you explain these points?
1. My phone is unlocked even though I signed a new 2 year contract to get it 50% cheeper. Will tge uograde work with this phone?
2. What site can I visit to get the upgrade?
3. Do you think us old version users will be able to officially download the new version for free?
Thanks, Mark
Hey Jenn thanks for the reply
I thought I had rooted my device following the intructions I got from the MoDaCo site but since you mentioned that your device gets wiped then I think I havent rooted my device because I still have all my data (contacts, emails, sms)!
I did everything that is said on the MoDaco link and I didnt encounter any problem and everything went smoothly but I have no root access! any ideas on what I should do? because I really want to have the 2.1 update
here is the link i used from modaco:
http://android.modaco.com/content/dell-streak-streak-modaco-com/310618/30-jun-r2-4399-how-to-root-your-dell-streak-superboot/
Thanks for the reply again
Answers to questions.
1) Your phone will be locked to At&t. Regardless if you paid for the 2 contract or full price. An upgrade will eventually work for this phone. Will this one particularly work? Only time will tell. Until someone gets the U.S. Streak and tries to install this we won’t know.
2) http://android.modaco.com/content/dell-streak-streak-modaco-com/315788/dell-streak-2-1-update-21-devices-download-here/ you will have to download it from your streak. Bookmark the page
3) Knowing Dell probably not. All of us on this side of the Atlantic have been getting the un-lubricated shaft from day one. But we can all keep our fingers crossed and maybe we will see a 2.1 update when the UK gets it in September. Otherwise we wait till March or 2011 (I’m just guessing with Dell it will be really delayed, and I don’t believe a word they say) to see 2.2 OTA update (Over the Air).
If I use the Dell PC Suite to backup up my Streak, can I restore it after the upgrade? I am using one of the Dell road-race beta devices.
Rooting the Streak does not wipe your data. Applying this 2.1 update does.
So, for the US – to root, or not to root? Has anyone tried it yet?
Is there any way back to the original 1.6 ROM if you decide this breaks something for you?
What I’d like to know is – How is 2.1 better than what’s on the Streak right now?!
Let’s face it, the old keyboard with numpad was better, the panels at the side on the camera were better, the home-screen wallpapers were a better format, the icons before were better spaced… so…
How’s it better? (I’m confused)
..oh and to add…
On the previous version (1.6) we could get two good size widgets on a screen, now I believe it’s only one…
Is one better, or two…?
I really want to know this as well.
uhmmm I rooted my phone and did the Update process..now my phone is bricked!!! ne help from anyone would be MUCh appreciated..
I rooted useing Universal Androot
What happened exactly and which version of the Streak do you have?
You may want to post this in the forum (better place for troubleshooting and longer discussions).
will post in the forums Jenn thanks soo much
Mine is coming tomorrow from the presale. I think that most of us (US) should just be a tiny bit patient and let the guys at modoco and XDA-Devs work their magic with the 2.1 ROM and “better” rooting tools.
Those guys are the epitome of hackers and they’ll make it work sooner or later and very likely before the real 2.1 or 2.2 is pushed out.
At least give them a week or 2, most of the experienced devs do not even have a device in their hand yet to experiment on…
Give them 6 months and I’m sure that someone will have a WinMo6.5 and ubuntu ROMs running.
You should be able to flash back to 4399 (1.6) link below.

Patience? You’re new here, aren’t you?

No, the lock will still be there.
If you have a card reader, then yes, you can take it out of the Streak and move the file onto it. The card needs to be back in the Streak for the update to actually take place.
The O2 version can be unlocked with a Rebel Sim. I didn’t have any success with it, though, but I have seen it done successfully.
I’ll try out the Rebel Sim with the AT&T version and see what happens.
Sorry, I don’t know if this works on the German Streak. I saw on MoDaCo last night that it worked on the French unlocked version but haven’t checked the thread since. You may want to swing by there to see if anyone tried it on the German unit.
TypePad HTML Email
OK, how about patience from the people that dont know what got root means but will know how to I unbrick my phone?
Sent from my HTC FUZE™, a Windows Mobile® phone
it will be coming monday. sorry they don’t deliver on saturdays and tgey left dell today
Your device is not unlocked. There is no official support on dells website and even if there is, they won’t help u with upgrade since this is not the official version. Yes when the official new version is out, you will be able to download it for free
any way to flash 4399 from 6267? i read on modaco that someone downgraded to 4399 then was able to flash 2.1
Just did the update. Very nice. The 720p vid recording is a little underwhelming but now completely removed all my concerns about whether the Galaxy might have been the better choice.
Cheers Jenn!
So I gather but did you read my list in previous post? I’ve yet to try 2.1 so I can’t be too critical (I need to look into being able to flash back to 1.6).
It just looks like a lot of the changes are for the worse :/
Sounds cool. Have an unrooted O2 locked Streak build 3883. I see confusing info about which version the update requires. Does the update work on 3883 or does it require 4399 ?
Is it wise to make a note of &/or exuninstall backups of all currently installed apps which would need to be reinstalled after installation of the update ? I’m guessing all contacts, outlook notes, sms messages etc would be deleted so a backup of them is wise too.
Many thanks!!
Conrad, odd isn’t it that a few smart guys in their bedrooms can produce, modify, improve etc upon stuff in days when it takes Dell/O2 and their whole teams of developers weeks or months to do less. Ok, I appreciate that there is a whole load of bug testing that the offical dudes do but it looks like levels of commitment vary from one place to another
Any particular reason you would want to run WinMo6.5 at all ? especially on Streak Hardware. Talk about being contrary :-> lol
It is a pain to unbrick, but i had to fastboot by holding volume keys down then run udpate.pkg again like flashing. just did it twice and i unbricked it.
I updated with the official O2 version and it has caused all sorts of issues. Would it be possible (and better) to install the leaked version? From what I read this is much better than the official one.
