Whenever an official software/system update is available for the Dell Streak, it is automatically pushed to the device for over-the-air download and installation.
Updates are often rolled out in waves, though, so you may not get a notification that an update is ready for your Streak at the same time as other users. But don't panic. You can manually check for an update at any time.
- Press the Menu button on your Streak.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and tap the About phone option.
- Tap System updates at the top. The stock web browser will open. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download/install it.
This method isn't foolproof, as there have been instances of some Streaks coming up empty, but it's the official way to check for updates.
Unofficially, there's always a way to get the latest version of the software onto your device. It may require a tiny bit of hackery, but that's part of what makes Android so fun, right?

Hey,
So after the 2.1 Unofficial update, would I be able to get the 2.2 whenever its release? It concerns me since I just followed your guide to update to 2.1 and when I click “System Update” it goes to zingstaging.com and not to the official dell website.
Are the beta’s going to get the updates, since they are not on ATT?
I suspect very much that if you have an AT&T streak and you have updated to the UK 2.1 firmware you won’t be able to update to a US firmware (At least using this method).
This doesn’t mean an official update has been released doest it? I’m getting mine end of next week once I get paid and that would just be to good
enable engineering mode by typing *#*#307#*#* in the dialer then go to your applications list and open up EMLIST app.
Scroll down and tap “NV” then tap “OTA Server” and select “mobileupdate” or “zingstaging”.
Then to hide the engineering apps, type *#*#308#*#*
not for the US one, but the UK ones are getting the official 2.1 this week.
US people have to wait for dell to relase 2.2 which they stated is going to be before the end of the year.
i think they will because when you check for an update it searches by the “OEM Version” So if you check for a system update and notice in the url it ends in your OEM version, so if the beta is like the Final which is “GAUSB1A120331″ then you should be good to go.
But also we have to worry about the FOTA model id.. i found out you can change that in the build.prop but not sure if thats what the rom checks that file or if it is hardcoded somewhere.
Also when the kernel sources are released (if they ever do release them) everything will be much easier.
