Just in case you need more proof that the Dell Stage UI shown in yesterday's video and in previous leaks is the real deal and will be included in the official Froyo update for the Streak, the device has been formally announced in Japan as the SoftBank 001DL. The headlining feature? Android 2.2 with Dell Stage, of course.
SoftBank will begin taking pre-orders on November 12th, with the first shipment expected in early December. Check out the official SoftBank commercial, as well as some choice stills, below.
You already know what I think of Stage but since you don't have to use it if you don't want to, then Japan's announcement bodes well for the rest of the world.
I'm sticking with DJ_Steve's Froyo build (version 1.2 includes Stage and lots of other stuff from Dell's build) indefinitely at this point, but the official unveiling of Stage and 2.2 for the Streak is definitely good news. It's still a waiting game, especially if the update is rolled out to different countries at different times, but at least it's closer than ever to being over.
Oh, and speaking of Stage, did you see that I have it running on my HTC EVO? It works better on the smaller screen, especially one designed primarily for use in portrait mode.

On the one hand, waiting and being second (or fourth) in line for the hardware release (UK, France, Germany, and Mars) and at least second in line for 2.2 (Japan so far), it’s also nice that these things are vetted a bit before they get to us in the USA.
well, we can always flash the recovery rom and 2.2 from the softbank streak like we did 2.1 from the o2 streak.
Wait Dell is giving Japan the red version and 2.2, what’s up with that. I hope they make the red one available here too when 2.2 comes out.
i liked the red one from the front, it was a subtle strip of red that made it look distinguished. but from the back… it was alot of red. snot available in america anyways. i do like the white one though. if they would have sold that here, id have snatched it up even faster than my black one.
I would just like some color options but the red one seems to look different every time I see it, sometimes it is a dark red and other times it looks kinda pink. I guess it depends on the lighting. Wonder if the white one will be exclusive to the US then.

What is up with Dell releasing all of the new stuff to any country but ours?! Last account I had Austin, TX was still in the USA. Also, as I understand it, and have experienced, most betas are released to those who want to participate. I haven’t seen Dell’s FroYo beta offered.

I have a red one (bought in Australia) and the color known officially as “New Cherry Red” (I believe) is just like Candy-Apple Red on a sports-car. I paid about $200 more for it than the official (black) Optus release, but as an “early adopter” I expect this
It’s still a great color, though…now for the official 2.2 Froyo (I’m not holding my breath for November, though)
I saw Streak working great with Froyo in Japan. Looks like the japanese carrier was performing some field testing. Heard from a reliable source that the Streak is getting Froyo on November 15th in the states.

Can i ask? If i update my streak in to official froyo. Can i still get the interface of 1.6 or 2.1?
I have the black version. I hope the Froyo improve the battery usage, at least more than 5 hours – This is what i got after full charged…. it’s kind of sucks on 1.6~
Check this site for some tips on how you can adjust certain settings to get better battery life. Many people report that it lasts at least most of the day. There is also a third party vendor that sells a battery that lasts longer.
Personally, I’d rather wait a couple weeks and make sure it is stable (who knows what Dell does to 2.2) before it comes out.

The official 2.1 does not work on my bought unlocked in germany streak at least . . if this happens again with the 2.2 upgrade, then that’s a really shitty move . .
