If your HTC EVO 4G isn't rooted, then it's used to not being able to do what all the other rooted EVOs get to do. Purity ring-wearing handsets have never met a new custom ROM or kernel, made a Nandroid backup, changed its LCD density or system fonts, pretended to be a Motorola Atrix 4G, or boosted SD card read speeds. And up until a few days ago, a stock EVO has never been able to see its display mirrored on a huge screen over HDMI.
But now it can. FullHDMI ($2.99), the first app in the Market that enabled full HDMI mirroring on the EVO, was recently updated to version 1.3.1 and no longer requires root access or a custom kernel for general functionality.
A special kernel is only needed for 720p output (800×600 and lower resolutions will work out of the box) and if you want to be able to output the audio from the EVO. Without this kernel, every stock unrooted EVO can mirror 800×600 and output audio over HDMI.
Who said only the rooted kids get all the cool stuff?

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I am def trying this tonight, hope it still works good when the 2.3 comes to stock users like me, thanks everyone for working on this..
The last full paragraph is confusing. You say you only need a special kernel to output the audio and do 720p. The next sentence says that without the kernel, you can output the audio over HDMI. So which is it, or can unrooted people only output the audio through HDMI and not the headphone jack?
A free app called hdmwin has had this ability for a while. It’s in the market.
Not bashing this mod at all I know a lot of work was put into this, but what are the benefits of it? The only thing I would use the HDMI out for it to view videos I shot on the Evo and I think the phone natively supports that.
So what are you guys doing with it?
I’m sorry for the confusion, but I’m not sure how I could have said it any clearer: special kernel = choice of audio over HDMI or from EVO, stock kernel = audio over HDMI only.
I’ve covered HDMwIn a few times before:

But as of today, it still requires root.
You cant veiw any bluxkbuster movies that have D%rm or play your games on it thru tv?
Ok, “from the Evo” means, using the Evo speaker.
People like being able to play all of their games and watch regular movies on the big screen. Web browsing is another possibility, though I’m not sure who would do that when their faster desktop/notebook is probably right there at home with the TV too.
Movies
Anyone that has their videos in .avi or .mkv formats can’t play them through the stock player. You have to download something like QQ player, or Vplayer.
With this app, you can use those alternate players, and still output to your HDTV. Also, FullHDMI is the only app around that works with stock, unrooted phones.
this app gives you the Evo you thought you bought last year.
Can HDMwIn output audio over HDMI now? It used to be only through the Evo’s speakers for non-Sense ROMs.
HDMwIn has had audio out HDMI for AOSP for a while now. This app just released a new version with the same feature plus no root needed for the majority of Evo owners out there.
Well said
i cant get this working for some reason. what am i missing? just a black screen.
Well, crap. I paid for this app then forgot I needed a special HDMI cable to use it. Any ideas on where to buy one and how much it might run?
Is it possible to output from a mini hdmi to usb monitor? I only ask because my company has cut back on net usage. I would prefer to watch videos that way. I have an older model monitor, with only USB ports. Maybe it is time to request an upgrade.
I’ve gotten HDMwIn to work fairly well on AOSP ROMs. But even the latest version on Sense gives me problems. Last night when I was testing it out, it kept disconnecting my WIFI when I’d stream a movie via HDMI out using Flash. I thought it was just an odd occurrence, so I tried it a bunch more times, turning wifi on and off, etc. It worked fine (but slow) over 3G, but I continued to get a ton of WIFI problems when HDMwIn was enabled.
Lots of options on eBay and Amazon. You get what you pay for on some of the ultra-cheap “brands”.
No, you can’t stream video over USB. You’ll need a monitor with an HDMI input. Or you can download the movie and then transfer it over USB and watch it on your work computer.
amazon has several hdmi cables of your choice ranging from 2.00 to 25.00
i rooted my EVO and i bought the full hdmi app to see if it works. and it does. the Only problem i had was watching youTube videos with it. everytime i try to play a video the screen flickers and the picture becomes distorted on my HDtv. why does that happen?
Thanks folks, can I ask which kind you bought? I’m assuming you are happy with yours?
SLING BOX!!!
Check out monoprice, they are cheap and I have had no issues with anything blight from them
rebooted phone and it worked
the youtube app already streams through hdmi. using Fullhdmi while running the youtube app with cause the issues you are experiencing. also this is mentioned in the apps description on the market.
Disable this app when using YouTube, the stock video player or any other app that uses the HDMI output. I think this is OK. You can enable full HDMI only when needed, say for a game or to demo something on a big screen. I kind of like not having everyone see everything while I’m looking for a video or slideshow to play. I haven’t used it yet, but have read the description and thought it through.
Well the wife and kids played Angry Birds Rio on it last night, worked great! there is one issue, I wanted to see if my blockbuster movies played and it went to total distortion when i selected play, i rebooted and it came up for a second and then went scrambled again any of you had this issue? i see where someone wrote you need another player is this needed?
I don’t know why I’m so special…. This app doesn’t work. And now, HDMI doesn’t work at all. I installed, then the splash screen comes up,”creating shadow buffer” etc. then white screen with green “htc” then “loading” and back to home screen. I un-installed and tried HDMI thru you tube, which worked before the install, and now, it doesn’t initialize the HDMI at all. I have an un-rooted EVO 4g, latest updates of course. any suggestions? Was I supposed to install something else also or am I just special?
UPDATE: Interesting…. re-booted, then it tried to start, went to white scree, the tried again (all of this automatically) then it started. After closing, I restarted and it started right up. so I guess it works.. will test when I get home and can plug in to my TV. I guess that’s what was needed, a re-boot.
Well in my case this is going to fit well with a project I am working on….. I own an Infiniti G35 that has an RCA port so my plan was to buy an HDMI converter (Digital to Analog converter) and root my EVO 4G to out put whatever is on the phone screen (map, apps etc.) onto the car center screen…. This way I can use the map app from the phone without needing to use 3rd party navigation system (the car did not come with navigation as option). With this app I no longer need to root the phone to get the phone screen to show on the screen in the car…..
I’ve been converting movies and putting them into my gallery so I can play them through the HDMI cord, besides playing games on the screen is there any other benefit to buying this app since I technically already can play any movie on my phone?
Hey guys, I’ve been using this app for sometime now, and it’s awesome! However, my girlfriend and I bought a new TV and whenever plug my EVO into the TV the mirrored screen is super small. Do you guys think i need to get the kernel for the 720p? That’s the only think I can think of. And if so, where do I get it. I’ve researched and found some, but I just don’t know which one. Thanks!
Can’t get any audio through the hdmi, i have to use earphone jack. Anyone had this trouble? Let me know if you have a fix.
My full hdmi is no longer in the market and I’m having truble with it that sucks because I paid for it
I can’t find it on the market
Every time I search in the market for this app I only get HDWin which requires rooting. Any ideas?
I cannot download. Can somebody help me
I have tried the web link and the market/ play …. I get nothing
