There has been a lot of talk recently about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note, but are we forgetting something? A little device called the Opus One, Dell's rumored successor to the Streak 5.
When the Streak received it EOL status in the Americas and was subsequently pulled from Dell's US website, many of us were left with a feeling loss. But even with the demise of our beloved pocket tablet, we current owners should not fret because a fresh face may be just around the corner.
Earlier this year, Dell's tablet and mobile phone roadmaps leaked with information pointing to a Q1 2012 release of the Honeycomb-equipped Opus One. If true, this falls right in line for a CES 2012 announcement. CES has often been a platform for Dell to launch new products and services, and is usually its biggest day of the year (as far as announcing new products go). Another important note to take away from these roadmaps is the listed update for the Streak 7, which could shed some light on the recent product shortages and delays that have been seen lately.
Back to the Opus One. Rumors suggest that it will be a dual-core 1.2 to 1.4GHz device with an upgraded screen and possibly running Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
While exact specs will be few and far between until an official release, a January announcement does give Dell the opportunity to make any last minute changes in hardware it sees fit, possibly to stay competitive with future products from Apple and other manufacturers that will be released towards the end of this year.
In the end this might be a win-win for those of us playing the waiting game. Especially in light of the delayed release of the fifth-generation iPhone, if Dell truly intends to compete we might see a bump in specs that we otherwise might not have seen.
Recently there has been some negativity regarding the Opus One, with many in this community making reference to what they wished it would be. Yet, there has been no indication by either Dell or any other outlet that the it has been discontinued or the plans scrapped.
Dell has a history of pulling products before there is a proper replacement; did anyone go looking for an All-in-One PC earlier this year? So far all the roadmaps and information we have still points to an Opus One release sometime early next year. For many this wait is going to be too long and they will have to make a switch earlier. I personally have already placed my preorder for the Galaxy Note, but I will have no problems passing it off for an Opus One on launch day.
So before we go running off and abandoning the company that pioneered the 5-inch tablet-phone form factor, let's remember that Dell seems rather intent on going forward with its tablet line. Even if we don't see future Dell releases stateside in the beginning, it still doesn't mean we won't see them ever. I remember anxiously waiting to pick up a Streak while drooling over them listed on UK sites.
I still believe that the Opus One is on its way. What it will be when it gets here and whether it was worth the wait remains to be seen.
Do you plan to wait for the Opus One or are you already looking at the Galaxy Note for your pocket tablet needs?

After what Dell put all Streak 5 users through “UPDATE HELL,” and with all the release delays, I am ECSTATIC that Samsung is considering a larger phone…
The reason I still have my streak, is it is the largest “phone” I can get….
Sorry dell, you screwed the pooch with the streak
I’d love for Dell to play in this market. But so far, they haven’t been aggressive. Samsung may swoop in and steak the market.
I love my streak 5, but will never buy another dell product again. I’m happy that a company such as Samsung decided to support a 5 inch phone tablet, I can’t wait for the release of the Galaxy Note
To be fair no one has given them a reason to compete until now. You think Dell dropped a 5-inch phone and didn’t expect it to be a niche market?
Hopefully this will be the kick in the rear Dell needs to get its self in gear.
im excited about the note but a little worried about the .3″ difference between the streak 5 and note. everyone thinks my phone is huge at 5″. id really like to hold it in my hands to see how i feel about an even larger screen. but then again im not patient at all so i might go for the note even though id rather support dell. after all there the only ones that were brave enough to support a large phone first and that definately deserves some credibility.
The Note is actually a smidge smaller than the Streak even with the bigger screen. Just hope it comes to AT&T in the US.
Seeing as how neither device has been officially announced for USA AT+T, And my renewal is not till April 2012, I am not jumping any ships yet.
But there are soo many devices coming…And I chose the Streak because it was the best choice, and is still the best choice, to meet my needs today.
My attention has been wavering for the the slab form factor since dual screen showed up. Nothing personal Dell, (or HTC when I retired my Tilt after my Wizard,) but brand loyalty does not apply anymore.
The company with the most appealing device, when I am ready to buy…WINS!
Peace
I’m not worried about an upgrade just yet. I don’t feel limited by the Streak’s hardware and there’s no point worrying about what I’m missing if there’s nothing to miss. Samsung has its own issues…I’d rather wait to see if the Note actually lives up to its promise before jumping ship.
Dell isn’t transparent, communicated poorly and left those of us who would’ve defied conventional wisdom and were potential evangelistists for this device form feeling burned. I hope they get it together for the Opus One. We’re moving away from desktops and loptops and netbooks to other forms of mobile computing. Samsung seems to realize that. But will Dell?
I’m willing to wait and see.
Here’s a bit of hope…

You guys still think the Opus One is coming, huh? Where’s the Streak 10 Pro? I think that’s all the answer we need. There very well may be an Opus One – in China.
I’ve already reserved my Galaxy Note as well. Your move Dell.
The Streak along with almost all other major mobile devices from Dell will be launching in China first. There is no question of that and we shouldn’t see it as a sign of something bad.
Dell recently signed a huge agreement with Chinese search engine Baidu, so of course they are going to play that market.
Agree 100%. Excited by Note. If best 5′ option in new year, will prob go with it. Other option is to stick with my streak till it busts and save some dosh
Found on Yahoo News. ——Dell is partnering with China’s top search engine Baidu to develop tablet computers and mobile phones. Analysts told Reuters that Baidu was one of China’s best known brands, and that carrying the name would boost recognition across the country for any tablet or mobile. The Chinese market is growing rapidly, and already holds more than 900 million mobile subscriptions. “We have a partnership with Baidu and you know we have the Streak 5 tablet, so the partnership will be in that space,” a Dell spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
And lighter!
if they try to put that chinese mobile platform on opus one im ditching dell… im tired of new mobile os’s popping up with no features until a year and a half later, when the os is mature enough to release a new update the mobile device is now outdated.. .:cough:. android in the beginning .:cough:. windows phone 7 now .:cough:. the note is looking pretty damn good now… i dont care about samsung updates cause ill load my own custom roms on it.. im doing it with the streak already and have rooted every phone ive ever had going back to the old windows mobile htc tilt.
“Baidu recently launched a new mobile application platform – which it said might be made available globally – and offered a glimpse of its upcoming mobile-operating system, which it hopes will find a niche on smartphones and tablet computers.”

I know it is early to tell but what I would start saving now, because from the Engadget article I got this:
“Here’s the letdown: the Galaxy Note is expected to top the charts in pricing as well, as it’s being reported that we should see the device show up in Scandinavia by year’s end for no less than €715 ($1,000 in the US)”
I don’t know if anyone saw this article…

*somehow managed to get that paragraph in twice*
my bad. long day.
I am hooked:
YES, I will buy a Galaxy Note (and release an unlocker software for it)
YES, I will buy the successor of the Dell Streak (and I’ll update the Dell Streak Unlocker to cover unlocking for it too)
+1
.29 inches more screen.
I never went with Dell for the name.
I was buying strictly for the screen size.
I have zero brand loyalty
Ever.
Hell yea Mark!!!!!
That’s the only thing about power us $1000 and I don’t think I will go down anytime soon.
The Streak isn’t the first 5″ phone. There was at least one before it. The HTC Advantage (Athena) phone was around for a while a couple of years ago. Here’s a link to the Wikipedia page for it.

It was an interesting device.
The Note is shorter and very slightly thinner, but it’s about 4mm wider than the Streak, and it doesn’t appear to be tapered at the ends. I think it will still fit in my pocket, but not more easily than the Streak, and maybe a little bit tighter.
I’m absolutely going to check one out at the first opportunity, though.
How did u reserve your note already?
So I guess all those jumping to Samsung forget their pathetic history with bugs and updates? The only difference between them and Dell is that they release new models constantly, and can’t afford to slowly work one model. As nice as the Samsung sounds, I wouldn’t hesitate to predict a nasty round of software issues, than numerous complaints about a lack of updates and fixes……
Dell Streak 5″ still meets my need but two things that I would like better
-Speed
-High Screen Res
And then comes the Galaxy Note. Dream come true, seriously thinking about pre-order into Aust market
Not realy this tipe of device ! On the picture more like pocket PC (UMPC).
