Sprint is rolling out an OTA update for the HTC EVO 3D right now, bumping it up to version 2.17.651.5. Now before you ask: no, this isn't the highly anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich update. Rather, the changelog is rather short, only including some unknown "Security Update." (Could this be the fix for that ugly WiMAX security bug uncovered by TrevE last October?)
Some other news outlets are reporting that this update also includes battery life improvements and an updated Peep client that aligns better with Twitter, although this isn't confirmed on Sprint's site.
To check and see if this update is available for you, just hit Menu > Settings > System updates > HTC software update. Since I'm running Fresh on my rooted EVO 3D, I'm not taking this update quite yet. But if you do, be sure to let us know how it's working out for you, and whether or not you notice any other improvements.
[Sprint via Android Central] Thanks, XpAcErX!

Not available for me yet. I’m hoping it rolls out soon because I could use some improved battery life.
Not available in Boston yet either.
No go on the west coast yet.
Negative in NJ
Jersey is a no go
Still negative in B-more…
Got the option to update last night in Boston. Didn’t cause I don’t want to kill my root.
No update in SoCal. Is there anyone that has gotten the update?
Hopefully it’s to strip out Carrier IQ!
nothing here. It will probably start tonight after 8pm or there just isn’t an update, its probably just a glitch. Oh well. I will recheck later tonight.
Nothing here in Philly
Nothing in Wisconsin…
I was hoping that as well but I think it would have been advertised with all of the scandal surrounding it.

FYI…it is listed on the Sprint EVO 3D support page with a release date of 1-17-2012

check back later or wait until the update notification is sent to your device. ”
Personally, sounds like they enjoy taunting people
I hope it fixes the photo frame widget.
Finally got it. Installing it right now.
Southern California.
UPDATE!
CARRIERIQ HAS BEEN REMOVED!
I just used the Voodoo CarrierIQ Detector.
Enjoy!
East Los Angeles is on, 10 minutes to complete and No CarrieriQ.
Las vegas on
I don’t know about anyone else but this update seems to have brought a bit more than what was let known. Not as far as widgets or any new features, no nothing like that. (except deleting CarrierIQ…has this been officially confirmed? And would this deletion bring about any performance enhancement (ie. less resource hogging/updating etc))
What it seems to have brought is a smoother operating experience. I had noticed for a while now that my Evo 3D seemed to move rather sluggishly, while not astronomically slower but noticeably, and since I monitor closely what apps, services, updates whathaveyou occur on it, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t any of that, at least to the the best of my knowledge. But since this update, screens move faster & smoother and without the hesitation that had seemed to plague it before, with or without other apps running. Also apps open faster, if even a little bit but it’s noticeable, and even graphically annotated playback seems to move along a bit zippier. And as a bonus, it seems websites attempt to load a little faster, again not super crazy lightning quick (as we might like) but noticeably.
Keep in mind my Evo 3D is not rooted, completely stock with a user who is almost hyper sensitive to any sudden change in speed or functionality.
Is anyone else seeing what I’m experiencing?
updated here in Ohio
I’v noticed it seems smoother too but I didnt know if that was just me and it being mind over matter. Glad to hear someone else thinks so too.
Just updated in Indiana, seems a little smoother and I now have the newer market.
I’m rooted but otherwise stock. Anybody with root get it from update option?
More – it just keeps saying it is checking but never seems to finish. I’m in Columbus, Ohio.
Updated in WI. AND no more Carrier IQ. Did a scan with Lookout Carrier IQ Detector. Had it before update, now it tells me I do NOT have it. So, yay!
I’m in dublin and I got mine this morning
Is this safe for rooted Evo’s???
Just did the update on my stock unit here in NJ, what is this com.android.smith process that’s running now? Wasn’t there before and can’t find anything in the Googles…
Use Voodoo OTA RootKeeper before you update to keep root.
See previous G&E posts for more details.

Bad advice……..tried it just to see, got the triangle with the Green Android….DON’T DO IT THIS WAY!!
I got it to reboot, but it did not take the update.
Thanx buddy
Here is updated root version on XDA-Developers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443592&highlight=651+5
I just installed the OTA here in Columbia, SC and I think it is a good improvement. Sense 3.0 now runs on my EVO 3D smoother than ever! There have also been some welcome improvements to Sense in this update.
The Launcher is now a much higher resolution, and those unsightly jagged edges are now a thing of the past

The Weather Widget has also been updated, it is now cleaned up a bit and looks less cluttered.

The Quick Settings Menu has also been updated with the addition of a Power Saver option.

In all, I think this update is very good one, and it brings some welcome improvements to the HTC Sense 3.0 interface.

Whoops sorry about the double post! Moderators please delete this.
Someone please help me out. I just got an EVO 3D today and accepted this OTA. However the HTC Bootloader Unlock Tool does not unlock the bootloader. At step 12 when I flash the unlock_code.bin it doesnt show up on my phone. Is there anyway to downgrade an OTA update to a previous one?
If you just bought a brand new evo 3D, more than likely it’s already unlocked. HTC has stated that their phones 2011 and onward will be built with this functionality already unlocked. Probably why it isn’t working for you. Go to boot loader mode and confirm to make sure.
