It's still not an easy process to downgrade your HTC EVO 3D with HBOOT 1.50 S-ON to 1.40, which allows you to achieve S-OFF and beat the absurd security that prevents you from using recovery normally to flash radios and kernels, but it's getting easier thanks to the work of Closeone.
Closeone has put together a bootable live CD containing most of the tools you'll need, along with helpful links to guides that will enable you to do things such as boot the CD from USB.
While it's not a one-click method and a computer and linux terminal are still involved, the commands are mostly done for you via scripts.
It's still a very uncomfortable process involving bricking your EVO 3D in order to get it into the right EMMC recovery mode, and then using EMMC recovery tools to push a signed, older bootloader into the corrupted area. But now there's a one-stop thread for everything you need to do it.
Personally, I'm still going to wait a little longer until this thing is completely wrinkle and burp free. I recommend that you do the same.
It's still wickedly awesome to see progress being made toward this being available to the masses of locked S-ON people.

Yeah I’m still lost with this root thing but if the ota for ICS doesn’t have beats audio, I’ma gonna be leaning on some of you to help me out with root.
I’m rather glad I jumped on the EVO 3D early and never had to worry about the newer HBOOT… Full root/s-off was so easy before those updates.
I just did this for my phone and it was actually not that bad.
Just load the ISO onto a bootable flash drive using the linux bootable tool.
Then you can just do two keystrokes and boom done with step one (really simple)
Then you relock your phone by typing “fastboot oem relock” through fastboot
Then you just load the RUU file they give you in the actual walkthrough and rename it PG86IMG.zip. Take out the back case, plug in the AC adapter, then take out the batttery.let it load up normally and then press vol up to update, then count 5-6 seconds and pull the plug. Then your phone becomes bricked.
Then you just go back to the bootable drive and do the last step, and there you have it. you’re unlocked.
Then just run revolutionary tool until you get s-off (may have to do it few times) then a “fastboot flash recovery YOURRECOVERY.img” and that should be it. Everything should be s-off unrooted.
Really tempted to root via this method… I’m just afraid of permanently bricking my phone. Plus I don’t know if I want to wait for the OTA ICS update or not.
How stable are the ROMS for the EVO 3d these days? Back when I first looked into rooting they were having some issues with the camera, wifi, etc…
It should have Beats audio as the HTC Vivid ROM does. Of course that probably will only work if you plug in headphones or use external speakers.
I think all Beats audio does is increase the bass a little. Nothing too huge.
Best thing I’ve noticed about Beats is it makes my horrible headphones sound good. I’ve listened to the Beats by Dre branded headsets and not been particularly impressed, but then again when I think quality headsets I think studio headsets
Just a thought but If u update to ics it will most likely ruin your chances at getting s off for a very long time. This tool they are developing will probably not work with ics.
I wouldn’t doubt it if HTC updates the bootloader with the ICS update.

Question, All I want is to root my phone without installing a custom rom, can that be done with the method from htc site? I want to be able to run wifi tether and root apps like setcpu etc… Can this be done with just the unlocking from the htcdev site? thanks to anyone who can help me.
by the way i’m on 1.50.
all you need to do is unlock via htcdev, flash a custom recovery, flash the superuser binary and install superuser from the market.
you do not need s-off / to do the near-brick in order to obtain that.
you might have to flash a custom kernel to get wifi tether to work, but it’s not hard.
