Today I got notification that there was an update for my HTC EVO 4G LTE, about a week after John had mentioned one was coming. The new software brings Sense 4.1 (stock was 4.0) and Android 4.0.4 (shipped with 4.0.3), and updates the radio to 1.12.11.0809 and HBOOT to 1.19.00. To throw in even more version numbers, the whole package is the 2.13.651.1 update.
According to a Sprint rep on the Sprint message boards, it addresses some Bluetooth connectivity issues, updates Sprint Visual Voicemail, adds an LTE scanning improvement that will hopefully fix some of the issues when leaving and re-entering a 4G LTE zone, fixes a browser closing issue, and includes an updated Google Wallet, although I bet it’s just the update from the market. Interestingly, the updates listed on the Sprint message board don’t mention the Sense 4.1 update.
One of the reported additions that rooted users have enjoyed for a while is the addition of a button selection tool accessible via Settings > Display, Gestures & Buttons that allows for changing the window selection button into a menu button to remove the annoying three-dot on-screen menu button.
You can force a check for updates by going to Settings > System Updates, and checking for an HTC software update. If you’re a rooted user running a custom ROM, wait until the developer of your ROM comes out with a newer version because the official update won’t take. These generally come out within a day or two of the official OTA, and in some cases before.
Root users just looking for the firmware bits (kernel, radios, HBOOT, stock recovery, etc.) can click here and grab them from Rydah’s firmware thread.
If you’re not rooted and the update does not show for your phone, try again later. Due to the massive number of EVO 4G LTEs out there, attempting to give it to everyone all at once would obliterate the network, so they stagger the phones for which it shows.
If you update, let us know how it works for you and if you discover anything neat about it.
Thanks to everyone who mentioned this or sent it in as a tip!

I don’t see quick settings in the drop down menu
do we have to enable it somewhere?
I don’t know (not running the update at the moment)
On rooted ones the quick settings often got changed the tapping the carrier banner… might want to check and see if that is the case
Didn’t seem to do anything :/ hope I’m just overlooking something….I want that menu haha
Paul,
I installed the 4.04 update and lost root access. I’ve tried SU Update Fixer and Voodoo…nothing seems to work. What are my options please?
For all looking for the remapping button option. The new update has placed it under settings, display/gestures, then under recent apps button function option.
There you have it!
Eric Hasslock
I don’t see where it says we now get quick settings in the dropdown area. Unless you mean the Setings shortcut? Did that go away for you?
I am on HBoot 1.15 and not able to get S-Off as of this point. I realize there is the HTC Dev Unlock version of root, but I feel more comfortable with S-Off.
Since the update also upgrades the HBoot to 1.19, does that mean there may be a way to exploit 1.15 that was patched?
Looking forward to any response.
just because they updated hboots doesn’t mean they did it to patch an exploit. They’ve done it in the past to add new phones into the same codebase or correct errors.
Since this new hboot is the new shiny thing, my bet is that people who are working on exploiting the old one will chuck that and start work on the new, but who knows.
I was S-OFF on my 4G, S-ON on my 3D, and S-OFF on the 4G LTE and other than radio updates there’s been no need for S-OFF if you do all your flashing at a computer (which I do)
BTW…Thanks Paul for the information on the update. I am a lurker on goodandevo.net and have posted either nothing or very little, but I do enjoy this site more than the other Android sites.
Hrmm, posted my response in the general as opposed to the person – delete
I am stock with HTC dev unlock + SuperSU root. I was able to accept this OTA update and Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper worked like a charm again, restoring root after the update. I do appreciate the remapping of the recent apps button without messing with it. Too bad they didn’t add long press to search.
Can we dare hope for stock Jelly Bean???
I think we’ll get JB on the 4G LTE and possibly the 3D as it’s still in service with Virgin Mobile
Well, it appears this update has brought back the return of the random reboot that was seemingly fixed in the last update. I’ve had it sitting on the desk here and twice now it’s just booted itself while idle with the screen off. The same thing was happening two revisions ago, but not nearly as often. Fun, I get to deal with this until possibly 4.1. Better not happen during a call.
It shouldn’t be doing that. Run it in safe mode (Google how to do that), if it’s still randomly crashing it might have a faulty motherboard. Do a hard reset and confirm the faulty board by random crashes even after the hard reset. You’ll need to get in touch with Sprint, if you got insurance, or HTC if you did not. The random crashes are not simply due to the OS. I had to send mine in to HTC for repair, they changed the MB on it and Sprint couldn’t reactivate the device so they replaced it for me with a refurb. Hope this info is helpful.
Another nice little change that I’ve noticed is in the stock browser. They’ve added a ‘Tabs’ button next to the browser’s ‘Menu’ button so you can switch between tabs with a single press instead of having to press menu and then press tabs.
It’s a minor change, but helpful.
Finally! I was so frustrated with that stock browser. I still prefer chrome
Great update, seems like a new phone. Much smoother and faster, apps open faster and multi-tasking seems better. Ran some Quadrant Standard tests and I am getting 5700-5900, used to get 4800-5100. Nice to have the menu button back.
There was a comment on XDA that Youtube has been added to the app associations menu, so you can now choose where those videos play – in the browser or in the Youtube app.
That’s awesome. I’ll have to try it out.
Something else I just noticed:
open Task Manager and check out how much Available/Total RAM you have now.
I don’t remember ever having 1024 MB show up as the total, seems like it was always around 500 MB. If you haven’t updated yet, check it out and please let me know if there is a change or if it’s just some sort of wishful thinking.
Aside from the Total being 1024, i’m still showing about the same amount being Available at any given time as before: between 150 and 275 MB.
pretty sure the most I ever saw was 500-700 megs available, with the 700 being on zram-using kernels. Wonder if it’s just reporting differently.
Yeah, I’m not sure, but I would like it if someone could explain what the change in Total RAM means.
Also, I’m not sure if the numbers in the Storage dock in Settings are different, namely, Internal Storage numbers…Phone storage still seems to be about 16 GB, but the Internal is a bit over 2 GB which I don’t remember what it was before.
ok, on storage: Internal on the older versions 2.27gb, SD card will report at 10.6GB. Should stay that way as the OS resides in the 2GB section.
Don’t know on the memory yet what that means. Will update when I find out if it’s just reporting it differently or if they had a bad memory checking routine which limited the available memory.
There is more usable ram. Before the updated the ram was maxed out at 500 mb now it is maxed out at 1024 mb. Now only if Swype would fix its spacing problem when you type is words.
I noticed that total memory is listed differently as well, also I noticed my phone doesn’t heat up if I’m doing a lot of things as once anymore, all in all a solid update, if quick settings show up please tell us how to get there!
The Menu button can be accessed from: Settings/Display,gestures & buttons/Recent apps button.
I just updated my recent apps button. It is so nice to access the menu with a long press.
Does anyone know if the update fixes the unstable wifi connection?
So far it has for me!
Thanks for the tip Paul! Great reporting as usual.
Paul thanks for the info. You mentioned up top about waiting for developers to update roms (i went bk to viper4g last night, CM10 kept doing lil buggy things and the camera is just.. Ya know) – however it was blazingly fast.
So, I know a update will surely be posted by team venom unless they’ve been working on JB or something but, you have the radios and such posted up top for flashing. Tips? Reasons to do so? I’m hoping I can flash these and look for their added benefits for now and then look for a full packaged update soon enough.? Or would that be a huge conflict between these official kernel, radios, etc.. And whatever my current viper4g rom has baked in? Thanks for any help as always. . I just don’t wanna do something harmful to my phone and idk if just flashing those components would do so.
I am indeed s-off
I believe you should be fine… I’d check and see if anyone says that it’s causing lockups or reboots with the new firmware and your particular kernel, but so far this seems to be just a bugfix update and no reinventing of the wheel.
However, seems to have started rolling at about 9am PST so it’s possible the phones just haven’t started exploding yet.
Radios supposedly include a fix for wandering out of an LTE zone and then back in.
Radios also include a fix for bluetooth.
Wifi connectivity is an issue with system settings app I read, so flashing radios won’t help intermittent wifi.
If you’re S-OFF, you can flash the radios (I suggest minus hboot and stock recovery) and if they don’t work, flash back – can’t remember the name of the thing but we wrote about it a month or two ago when we thought you might be able to roll back hboot… supercid I think was the name of it.
No idea on venom. I just left Viper4G for another ROM because i needed Google Now working properly and my venom didn’t like it… I’ll be back I’m sure.
Sweet will give it a go. Btw? What rom are you now running.
Thanks for the info
Sry, reminds me.
I was using Google now back on viper b4 i changed to decks cm. Isn’t there a version on here you guys submitted for us to try. . Guess I’ll scroll back fee pages. I really enjoyed messing with it. Also, what were some of the things you noticed not playing nicely?
it doesn’t speak out the results on mine, and the voice recognition portion seemed spotty.
Pretty sure someone posted something about Google Now! – not sure if it was on the G&E microsite or pocketables main though.
I’m playing with meanROM 3.4 (or whatever today’s release is). Needed a ROM with full working Google Now, and whatever I tried I never got a good version to completely work on Viper4G… that was probably from lack of looking, but I got a bit tired of the same ROM and wanted to move on
Yeah so far I can’t find a rom I like more than MeanRom. It seems to have everything I want at the moment. That and all the options on it are great. I don’t know why but I love landscape Rosie.
Do I have to do the whole (rename file). Or will TWRP take care of everything?
I love this rom (viper4g) it allows u to tweak it alot.. especially with the cpu an update will be out in the next day or soi bet
Menue button not working as it should after update. Any one else? Stock non root. I’m really trying to like the LTE as much as I liked my 4g.
Fred, I noticed the same thing on my stock non-rooted phone. My phone vibrates like it acknowledges the touch, but it doesn’t do anything….. Anybody notice any imporovements with the “multitask button”? Does it still refresh the apps when selecting them?
Not all screens have menus by design… The sense home screen does nothing when hitting the “menu” option… But all my other apps that have options work fine… Since Sense for our phones was designed around the Settings option in the pull down notification area, I would presume that the structure for the old menu/settings we were used to on our OG Evo/ Evo 3ds just doesn’t exist… Just my $.02
A Sense homescreen menu does exist, I can bring it up with my bluetooth keyboard menu key. I’m downloading the update now so I’ll see if it works like that with the remapped phone key.
Well, whatever Sense homescreen existed before is gone now. I was able to use the menu key on a bluetooth keyboard to bring it up before, but no longer. No loss really. One other thing — I was able to unlock the screen with the menu key on the keyboard, but no longer. I was kinda hoping that would work with the remapped phone key, too. Again no real loss. It’s great to have a menu key for all the apps.
Scott, same thing. It vibrates but nothing happens. No menue. Hold it in and recent apps come up.
YouTube link is in there under app association. Finally it will take me to app instead of browser.
Nate, so you are saying the change to the button is not meant to bring up the phones menue/settings screen? Only app menues?
What about FoxFi? Is it still working? Anybody know?
Yeah, I just used FoxFi last night. It works.
This update seems to make the phone a lot smoother, and it’s great to be able to map the menu key to the recent apps button. I haven’t been able to convince myself to root yet, despite how much I did on the original Evo b/c it appears as if none of the Jelly Bean Roms have everything working smoothly yet (including google now)
the Google Now for ICS project seems to have finished and is working fine… don’t think you can install without rooting though
Paul your correct. Google now replaces the goggle voice search witch is a system apk and can only be inputted by flashing or root manager.
Well, I’m glad they’re working on these updates and rolling them out. I was hoping we’d be at 4.0.4 at least before 4.1. This is hopefully a good sign that they’ll stick to keeping this line on top of software updates.
Does anyone notice that when you charge your EVO LTE with the phone on the most time I can get is about 2 days max and that is with about 2 hours of screen time. But when I turn the phone off and fully charge I get as long as 3 days+! The battery on this thing is amazing! I have 3 days 8 hours with 40 mins of talk time, 2.5 hours of screen time and I’m still at 15% battery left! Why won’t the phone fully charge when its on?
So they took out the EQ in the stock music app, only beats audio and default are left. No bueno HTC
Yeah I noticed that too no presets! I do use beats audio but was hoping they’d add the surround sound preset to the presets but instead they removed all but beats /no beats. What! I miss that from the E3D! I do have a HTC music player apk. But am scared to load it up considering that it won’t add to but replace the stock app leaving me with no beats audio! Any ideas besides root?
The stock email app now has a select all feature, that made my day.
Where is “select all” in stock mail app? In Menu, I see “refresh”, “folder”, “sort”, “filters”, “new account”, “settings” only.. no select all..
I love everything everyone mentioned.. any more goodies that hasn’t been posted?
not running the rom, but isn’t it menu, select all?
I can’t seem to find The quick settings
Same here, I’m hoping someone finds it or how to enable it….that’s one of the things I was look forward to most.
Wow. The pages flip way smoother no lag. The multi tasking actually loads. Even typing seems better. More accurate. Quick settings is still there for me. Idk about you guys. This is the way this phone is supposed to run. Holy shit. Thx HTC!!
still there? as in quick settings are in your drop down menu? Are you stock/non rooted?
Yeah, still there?! You can’t be stock…
The remapping for the menu button didn’t work. It vibrates but doesn’t do menu. The recent app works tho. I have my quick settings tho. So it really doesnt matter. Wait oooooo its only for in app. Nvm. Makes sense. Hah
Yeah my drop down quick settings is still there I’m stock not rooted
Oh really? screen shot please of your evo 4g lte with quick settings would be greatly appreciated…..or if you know how to enable it….then you’d win the internet lol
I noticed the Tabs button on the stock browser has been relocated to the top menu now.
If I remember correctly, Adobe Flash Player worked properly prior to the update but not any more. Am I correct? The website states no support for Android 4.1 or higher. Any insight?
Flash is dead / gone: http://www.pocketables.com/2012/08/happy-death-of-flash-day.html
we got updated to sense 4.1 not android 4.1 (jellybean). We also got updated to android 4.0.4 which is an updated form of ice cream sandwhich, so there should be no problem with your flash player
That’s what I thought too but my Flash Player isn’t working at all. I wonder if it’s no support for anything higher than Android 4.0?
Ignore me… I’m an idiot! The stock browser settings were reset to default so I just needed to enable it!
Ah, I thought you were trying to get a new install from the market..
Yay more RAM is now free on my LTE! [unrooted] much more snappy & love the remapping of the ‘Recent Apps button
So…my Dad upgraded to the E4GLTE last night at Best Buy. He came over to my house and I looked at his phone and compared it to mine (also E4GLTE). After working with his, syncing various accounts, and maneuvering through menus and apps, etc., there was a noticeable difference in speed with mine (after having the most recent update) even though I’ve got a ton more apps and activities going on than his brand new stock E4GLTE.
The updated phone was just smoother and quicker in all responses. I did a side by side test of pressing the recent apps button and the updated phone loaded about half a second faster than my Dad’s.
Also, the vibrate function for touch input is toned down significantly enough after the update that it was noticeable. And that is a good thing.
The multitasking is noticeably better now, I’ve got less loading, re-loading, and refreshing going on when switching back and forth between apps. The most noticeable example was when I was streaming audio and jumping to another app in the process (Dinosaur War – heavy RAM user), the audio still played without a hitch and I able to return to the audio after with no issues. That was not the case before. If I was streaming audio, there was no way I was going to jump to that specific game or similarly heavy RAM sucking apps because it would completely shut off the stream and upon reopening it would have to be started over again.
Intermittent data connection and random loss/cutouts have all but been eliminated. I suspected that the intermittent connection had to do with lack of true multitasking and it seems that that’s greatly improved the phone in that area. I haven’t noticed it happening once since the update; whereas, before data connection issues plagued me multiple times per day.
Altogether, this is a very great update that fixes just about every problem that I’ve experienced with my Evo 4g LTE to this point.
Great Job, HTC!!! We know you still care about America…a little!
This update is killing my battery all of a sudden. Used to make it a good hr and a half before reaching 90%. Down to 75 in that same time frame -___-
4hr, 26min and I’m down to 93%. No difference for me.
3G stays on. Instagram emails web browsing and music. If your phone is idle for that time then you won’t see a change in percentage
I also noticed they changed the way the battery shows the charge. Instead of showing 90% as a small portion gone it shows it as a huge chunk missing out of the battery. Not liking that.
Something else HTC fixed…
Touching the Clock widget on the home screen would always default to the “World Clock” tab, regardless of what tab was last opened. After the update, it now remembers the last tab visited. I hated that it wouldn’t take me back to the “Alarm Clock” tab every time. Thank goodness!
How do u post a screen shot on here? I’ll show u the quick settings is still there?
You could screen shot it on your phone, upload the photo to a site like photobucket and then post the link to that photo here
Im getting quadrant scores of near 6000 holy shit!! Idk what that update did but this phone is now the undisputed king.
Thanks for the info. I love this site! I do wish we would get Jelly Bean soon though.
Anyone know if there is a easy root method that works with this update yet?
Regawmod should work the same… only issue it’s had since day 1 was they changed where a file was located so the old versions couldn’t patch it.
There’s no S-OFF, but that’s not really important.
Sheeeeee-yet.
All my contact assigned ringtones are playing the general call ringtone. I tried resetting them all within contacts as well as resetting the LTE.
Anyone else getting the general ringtone instead of personalized ringtones?
I’m having the same problem. They fix one thing and mess up something else.
Ring tones problem. I have the same issue. This problem was posted on other boards. All the contacts ring tones are set correctly but when it rings i get the default ring tone for all of them. I’ve called HTC and spent over 30 minutes on the phone with tech support with no success. The problem was logged and elevated to the HTC developers. I’m supposed to get an answer from HTC in 5 to 7 biz days (or maybe more, they could not commit to the response time frame).
I’ll report their answers as soon as I’ll receive them.
Quick update on ring tone problem. Got a call back from HTC developers. Good and bad news: they are aware of this issue ; but not fix yet. No ETA for the fix. Apparently they OTA the fix. More to come….. (I hope! L
Same here with the contact ringtone issue. Was about to do a hard reset so thanks to y’all for posting this. Thanks for the recap Paul.
Yes, FoxFi still works
6000 quadrant scores on a non-overclocked new base/kernel… ddaaaaaaaamn…
Anyone having problems updating profile and prl after new update
I still haven’t got a straight answer on whetherthe update brings quick settings or not? Most people seem to be saying no, but some say yes. That’s the most important feature for me!
Reading through here, xda, couple other places: To some it does, to some it doesn’t.
I’m not running stock so I can’t comment
Are people confusing quick settings with the settings shorcut? I didn’t see it stated anywhere that qucik settings are an added feature. By quick settings I’m thinking like a widget in the pull-down area.
My quick settings in the drop down notification bar is what I’m talking about. Mine is still there after the update. I don’t see them taking that out of there it wouldnt make very much sense. If some of you did the update and now its gone I’m sad to hear it.
They weren’t here before or after the update in the drop down menu lol there’s the widget for them but not in the notification bar/drop down menu
Will there be any future updates like these to the evo 3d??
Now my google voice recognition is not working. Anyone else have the same problem?
Samson my quick setting button is right next to the clear button. In the drop down.
DONT PLUG YOUR EVO INTO A REGULAR CAR CHARGER. Me and lots of other people learned the hard way that your phOne will turn off and never turn on again.
My phone did this. Just press and hold power button for 20 seconds(or more).
I discovered an undocumented change that fixed one of my big pet peeves…when using the HTC weather clock widget, tapping the time used to take you to the “World Clock” tab in the Clock app (this was probably also true when opening the Clock app directly).
Even if you reordered the tabs, it always defaulted to that World Clock tab which is annoying if you mostly go in there to set alarms. It looks like now it remembers what tab you were on last and opens back up to that tab.
Any word on quick settings tab anyone?
Bugs bugs bugs!!
Typing someone’s name into a new text message and their number doesn’t pop up. Hit “People” button and it goes to contact but says “loading” and then finally loads them.
“Email” app, which I use for work email: hit “reply” and the email comes up but the contact field is GONE! Thus the “send” button is greyed out and I can’t even send the email.
Widgets don’t load.
Phone has frozen multiple times since update. Never did before.
It seems like a problem specific to the update to Sense. Is anyone else experiencing any of these issues? I sure hope so!! I want them to get resolved!
Is anyone having trouble with the 4.0 update. My OTA pinged me to install but when I get to CWM it aborts there. Do anyone know what the problem would be?
If you have clockworkmod you can’t install an OTA.
If you have a custom recovery you can’t install an OTA from Sprint that requires a reboot.
No this was the MeanRom OTA update. I still can’t do that in CWM? How am I suppose to use the update then? I tried to go into the custom recovery but couldn’t find the file to manually install from there…
Oh, sorry… meanrom OTAs you’re somewhat out of luck…
you need HTC Dumlock or Flash Image Gui and a downloaded copy of the ROM if they changed the kernel out in that particular release.
If they didn’t, you need a recovery that supports the meanrom scripting – I know TWRP 2.2.2.0 does but don’t know about CWM
Any word when they will release the OTA that fixes these issues introduced in the last one? Which will come first the OTA fixes or JellyBean?
Thanks.
I am confused about the settings tab on the update. I read that this was a new feature but its all the same for me. I just get the setting shortcut on the top right of the notification bar and that’s it NO TAB is there a way to enable it or something
looks good BUT, now I cant connect to my own home WIFI…. stock
