Rumor: Google is designing ultra high resolution touchscreen Chromebook called the Pixel
François Beaufort has made quite a name for himself on Google+, pouring over Chromium code and discovering new things that Google is working on in Chrome OS. But Beaufort has taken a slightly different approach in his most recent post, uncovering what might be a brand new device that’s being tested internally at Google right now.
At this point, it isn’t clear exactly where Beaufort is getting his information, but the new Chrome laptop – dubbed the Chromebook Pixel – is said to feature an ultra high resolution display (2560 x 1700, to be exact) with over 4 million pixels. A promotional video was posted earlier in the day on Google+, only to be taken down later. However, someone did manage to upload it to Daily Motion, and you can view it below.
The video states that this Chromebook is “Designed by Google, down to the last pixel.” If real, this confirms earlier rumors that a touchscreen Chromebook would be on the way soon.
This would also signal an interesting turn of events at Google: until now, all Chromebooks that have been marketed and sold to the public have been produced by manufacturers that operate mostly independently from Google. Could this be the start of a Nexus-like program at Google for Chromebooks? Will Google partner with another manufacturer, or is Google manufacturing these on its own?
Additionally, from what I could see in the video, the laptop has a noticeably square-shaped design with sharp corners, reminiscent of Motorola design cues. Perhaps Google is using Motorola’s manufacturing know-how to create this. Also, the video seems to indicate that it will have at least two USB ports, an Ethernet port, an audio jack, and (possibly) an SD card slot.
