HTC One M8 can run ART right out of the box

Android KitKat

Android enthusiasts should be very pleased to find out that the new HTC One M8 will have the option to enable ART runtime right out of the box. Even though the HTC One M8 is being released running KitKat, ART compatibility wasn’t necessarily a given – for example, the 2013 HTC One does not have this option, even after the KitKat update.

ART is currently in an experimental beta phase as Google works out all the kinks before transitioning to it full time as a Dalvic replacement. I’ve had it enabled on my Google Nexus 5 almost since day one, and after switching back and forth between Dalvic and ART several times, I do notice a slight increase in responsiveness and battery life.

While there were initially some app compatibility issues (most notably with WhatsApp and Facebook picture uploading), I’m pleased to say that, for the past several months, I have experienced nothing but smooth sailing with ART. New HTC One M8 owners who wish to enable ART will have to do so in the Developer Settings.
