Google Nexus 6 by Motorola will get WiFi calling in early 2015
One of the biggest pieces of news about the new Google Nexus 6 by Motorola is that it will be available on all major carriers at launch: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and even US Cellular. And if you remember anything T-Mobile’s last Uncarrier announcement – WiFi unleased – then you probably remember that T-Mobile said 100% of its phones going forward would support WiFi calling. But Nexus devices have never supported WiFi calling on T-Mobile – so what does this mean?
Simply put, Google and T-Mobile are currently working together to bake the feature into Android Lollipop, and it should be ready to go by early 2015. This means that the Nexus 6 will receive an OTA update shortly after its release that will enable the feature for T-Mobile customers.
Some questions still remain, however. Namely, it’s unclear whether other Nexus devices will also get the feature, including the Nexus 5 or Nexus 4, both by LG. It’s also not clear if WiFi calling will be available to Sprint customers, or whether this will be a T-Mobile exclusive. And finally, both T-Mobile and Google have been suspiciously quiet about VoLTE support on the Nexus 6, even though it has the chipset and all necessary components to do this.
In any case, WiFi calling on the Nexus 6 is a gamechanger for me, and I can’t wait to try it out myself.
