Starting today, HTC will include ads in BlinkFeed

BlinkFeed-MonetizationDo you enjoy using BlinkFeed on your HTC device? If so, you might enjoy it a little less after today: the Taiwanese manufacturer announced earlier this morning that it will start testing “promotions” in the feed, which is just code for ads.

By the end of the day today, it should be live in the US, the UK, Germany, Taiwan, and China. And while users will be able to opt out, the fact remains that HTC is injecting advertisements by default into stock software on a device that you already paid hundreds of dollars for.

The silver lining is that this ad program will only affect BlinkFeed, and not other parts of the HTC Sense software. They will also be differentiated from other posts in BlinkFeed with a “sponsored” tag, as well.

After it evaluates this pilot for a bit, HTC will then decide when and where it will roll out the ads next.

What do you think about HTC’s decision to include ads in BlinkFeed?
