Default Hard drive upgrade query

Would love to upgrade my hard drive. I did research and this is what I have found:
  • ZIF SSD on S5 is a more popular upgrade
  • Runcore is bigger and uses a lot of power
  • Viliv or Yukyung is out of business
  • Re-installing Windows should be easy through Xfer to USB thumb drive
  • Some Internet articles suggest Sandisk made similar drives up to 64GB

Given that I do not want to compromise on battery power. More important as these batteries age! In order to achieve that it seems I should use a Sandisk pssd-p2 64gb. For other storage there's a Sandisk 64GB mobile ultra inserted into the microSD slot and thankfully the N5 is compatible with microSDXC.

I do want to install more programs on non-removable storage and solution of nuking the recovery partition is undesirable. If I locate a bigger drive would like to make a recovery partition on it, if possible.

Searching for the sandisk pssd-p2 64gb was not lucrative and came up empty for purchasing options. If it is available, anyone have a link? Failing that, is there a reasonable alternative which would carry a reasonable performance and without a big power consumption hit?

Thanks!

If you don't have a 3g modem, I actually fit a super talent 1.3" ssd in the N5. I just used electrical tape to secure it and its running fine.

The FEM64GF13M has a 40-pin connector, but the Viliv N5 has a 35-pin cable (unless I miscounted the pins). Do you use an adaptor or did you just align the cable properly? I suspect that 40-pin ZIF and 35-pin ZIF don't have the same pitch (0.5 mm vs. 0.3 mm).

I looked again: the Viliv N5 PATA ribbon cable has 40 wires with (approximately) 0.5 mm pitch.

Note that there's also a 128 GB version of that SSD, FEM28GF13M.

Important note: for that SSD, you have to use a flip ZIF cable (type D, with contacts on opposite sides of the cable) rather than one of those ubiquitous type A ZIF cables (like the original Viliv ZIF cable).

Unfortunately, that SSD is incredibly slow for small write requests. I get about 0.02 MByte/s for 4096 byte blocks, that is, 5 IOPS. Windows takes 2 minutes to shut down.

The original SSD for the 64 GB Viliv N5 (M911E64GB) seems to be available here:

Apparently, the seller ships to China only. Do we have any brave members forum members living in China?

I got one of those M911E64GB SSDs via buychina.com and successfully upgraded a 32 GB N5 to 64 GB without losing the UMTS modem!
