You didn't think more Streak colors were the only thing that came out of Dell's private presentation, did you?
According to someone who was at that presentation, Dell has plans to release a second-gen Streak in May 2011. It's currently being called the Opus One and while it was not specifically referred to as the Streak's successor, the image shown while the Opus One was being discussed was of the Streak and Streak Froyo.
The device is said to have a 5-inch screen just like the Streak, but with a high resolution of 1280 x 800 (or somewhere in that range). Powering the new tablet/phone hybrid is reportedly a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (one of the new Qualcomm Snapdragons, perhaps?).
Now, just because a Dell rep presents this information to a group of people doesn't mean that the Opus One will really be made/sold, especially with a release date set for six months from now (when phones will probably need to double as hovercrafts to impress anyone), but just in case, I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
Thanks, anonymous tipster!

I’d consider going for one of these but tbh the current streak does all I want it to do (with DJ’s froyo 1.2). My only criterion would be it’s battery life. I’m interested, if this is indeed anything more than a rumour, what Dell hope to achieve by another release. The streak is a cracking wee device and Dell appear to have put it out almost as an afterthought with no obvious intention of making much money from the project
I’d like to see my friends boast about their iPhone 4′s ppi when this bad boy comes out! Sounds exciting, I wonder what kind of pricing we’ll have to expect.
Text would be so small, you wouldnt be able to read it.
Glad I bought my current Streak off-contract. I’ll be eligible for a subsidized upgrade next year. I agree with Pygar to an extent, the current Streak meets my needs. And if the dual-core proc has a negative impact on battery life, I’ll be less interested.
@dans – That would be a concern also. Depends on how Dell handles the issue. They did quite well with the customization on the 1.6 Streak to make fonts and icons viewable. Also might depend on Android 3.0, which I’m guessing will be available by then. Since it’s going to be optimized for tablets, I’d be surprised if they don’t address the redonkulous pixel density issue.
I’m happy with both the speed and the battery life of my Streak right now and its running 1.6. Its been well known that the trip to 2.2 helps it in both the previously mentioned departments, so the fact that it can get even better with just software is great.
On the other hand we are talking about Dell here. Do you REALLY think they would get a new Streak with a dual core 1.2 snapdragon in it out by MAY???? I’ll be looking for it when my latest 2 year contract is up in 1 year 11 months form now. lol
Yeah, no way in heck they launch that soon.
But… How exciting! Yes! Dell has a form factor that I truly believe will continue to grow adopters.
I have my doubts with the 7″ range… I think there will be two successful camps; 5″ and 9+”.
Sweet! I’ll be just about ready to drop my Verizon contract by then!
The game of expectations …
I expected this much sooner than May. The Streak has been ‘in the wild’ almost a year … and is unchanged in all that time
The rumor its upgrade won’t be due until May (a year and a half from the Streak’s prototype) … says a lot!!!
I had been looking forward to the Streak II … but if it is “rumored” for May … I will not be waiting
FYI … have seen the Streak at Best Buy … and it is nice, and I like the size! (… but it is out of date by today’s standards)
OMG! The heavens have opened up…the light shine down…OOoooooooahhhhhhhh…….
Wow a new product, fantastic DELL! I am so sorry for the sarcasm but I am so close to taking my streak back to best buy after I un-root it. Maybe I should move to sprint and get the EVO? I think it is so frustrating that DELL has not released 2.2 for US AT&T!
First Sony Ericsson is suppose to release the X12 next year with Android 3.0 and now Dell is suppose to release this Streak II? I hope it is all true but after they both took forever to release the X10 and Streak and then stuck with 1.6, it is hard to believe. I don’t really get the reason for releasing a follow up to the Streak so soon though since it does not seem this one is selling so well. Maybe they will have a yearly release like the iphone, would be cool.
…, because the laws of physics forbid using larger fonts on higher resolution screens?
Have you seen all the problems with the EVO? And most of Verizon’s Droids – both the ones from HTC and Motorola. Dell actually did pretty well. Most Streak hardware issues seemed to be with a few early units and other than that, most issues can be trace back to bad apps.
Like everyone else here, I’d be surprised if Dell could launch by May, but I think the wait is based on them having to wait for Android 3.0 to drop to devs. Once it does, they have to customize it, test it internally, and get FCC approval. The hardware will probably be done quickly, as it will likely be very similar to the current model with the dual-core proc and new screen dropped in.
Some of the things people complain about being slow now with every Snapdragon/OMAP/A4/Hummingbird device (such as large spreadsheets, PDFs, image processing, video processing) will open much faster and run smoother on a dual-core if the apps can leverage it. Even if individual apps can’t, being able to have a mobile AV running in the background and multi-tasking will benefit tremendously, much like the early days of dual-core desktop processors.
And again, similar to the desktop evolution, ARM’s new embedded GPU will enable crazy speeds for parallel processing applications, but that’s likely 2-3 years from hitting our hands. I think we can look at netbooks for a parallel to what will happen in phone/tablets over the next 3 years. Casual users will be happy spending less money on a single core device with a low-end GPU that does the job with decent battery life. Business and power users on a budget will insist on either a dual-core proc, or single-core with a better GPU. Hardcore users and gamers will have to have dual-core with a killer GPU.
Interesting and relevant!… I, on the other hand, have my doubts about the mass appeal of the 5″ because it is at the extreme upper end of truly pocketable devices, with the sweet spot between 3.7″ and 4.3″. My biggest objection to the Streak is its weight: at 220g that’s almost twice the weight of the Galaxy S (118g). My current device weighs 130g and I find this at the limit of acceptable weight for my shirt pocket, where I like to keep my mobile.
Bigger devices fall more into the MID’s/tablets. There, the 7″ is interesting to me because it’s easy to hold in portrait mode in one hand and weight should not be an issue for prolongued use. I could not do the same with an 8.9″ much less a 10″. I’ve tried to use a 10″ (an iPad) and I found it impractical to use on-the-go. It’s fine (great even) for the couch or at the coffee shop where one can use both hands for holding it though….
I’m not overly surprised – Dell did say that the Streak was the first of a family of products. Arm Dual Cores are being manufactured and Dell was late to the party and needs to show it is able to produce state-of-the-art products in a timely fashion. But I doubt that we will see any dual-core based products in mass volume before the summer.
And, regrettably, given how late the Streak was made available in Canada, I probably will not see the Opus in Canada before 2012
I’d like to see slightly thinner bezels on the side even if it made the device thicker, having even an extra half an inch would make one handed typing in portrait a lot easier. Other than that maybe a better camera to compete with Apple, being a larger device surely they could have a larger/better sensor. Until something like this comes out I’m pretty happy with my Streak. Anyone else with a Streak get heaps of people saying “what the heck is that?” or “Wow it’s so big!” It’s a daily occurrence for me, I have to say I quite enjoy it!
2.2 is in beta on the Streak now, and it addresses all of the issues that I had with 1.6.
Rogers needs to get it’s act together for sure.
I regularly get mine confused in the wild for an iPad.
I don’t see an immediate need for an upgrade on my Streak, but if this is the development path, I’m excited for when I do change. I love this form factor, especially for portable note taking – several colleagues have remarked upon its use for those purposes – and I’m glad that Dell seem at least somewhat committed to it.
I’ll be able to read it. I am near-sighted. I want one, and I want them to hurry up already.
F*ck Dell. Bunch of lying aholes. 1.6?, you got to have your head way up your ass to buy another one of their products. Looking forward to receiving my Atrix very soon. Then I can give this pos to my 3 year old to play games on. Crash and burn muthaf@$ckers!.
yeah, but if they don’t put it on t-mobile, you’ll want to throw it away. Att has that affect on cell phones…
will u please explain what does that “Law of physics forbid” means…plz
Okay, So it’s now May of 2011…Anybody have any new news updates on this release or even existence? Best Buy stores in the metropolitan D.C. area are now completely sold out of the Streak5 and I really want that to be a sign that I should wait for the Opus. Would buy directly from Dell & extend ATT contract, but BB offers well-needed protection plan. Everything about the Opus appeals to me, given all the research and comments I have found in planning on buying the Streak.
Someone must know something on the Opus!
ya its may but not get anything about opus one,
following page shows some info. regard to release date

srcoll down the page
its august when is the opus one coming out ????
is there any news from the dell?????
Not that there is any word from Dell on this being real so far, but, it just occurred to me that this may be a tablet only device if it really does ever exist. Looking at the road map it says Honeycomb as the OS and DJ_Steve stated that Honeycomb is a tablet only OS that does not support calls. While I had been very excited about a new 5″ device with the duel core and all, I am not sure if I want it if it can’t make calls!
Really?….It’s called unlocking a phone.
