Apple introduces $199 iPod touch, includes camera and new colors

ipod touch

Apple today introduced a new budget model of its iPod touch line. Priced at just $199, the new 16GB iPod touch now comes in a variety of colors and includes a rear-facing camera and lanyard loop. This is a major upgrade from the previous budget model, which was priced at $229, came in only a black and silver design, and didn’t include either a lanyard loop or a rear-facing camera.

It’s interesting that Apple is releasing this new budget model of the iPod touch, especially now, considering that new iDevices are expected this fall. Apple CEO Tim Cook has gone on record to say that iPod touch sales are going down in favor of iPhones, though, so this could be a move by Apple to increase its marketshare of those of a younger age who may not be ready for a smartphone just yet.

The 32GB and 64GB iPod touch models have also come down in price. The 32GB model is being sold for $50 cheaper and is now $249, while the 64GB got a $100 price cut and is now just $299.

If you’re in the market for an MP3 player with a touchscreen, these newly-priced devices are going to be the best deals you can find. Each model comes in a number of beautiful colors and are practically identical with the exception of the storage size.
