Confirmed: Google Drive will take over auto-backup function from Google+

google-drive-logoNow that Google Photos are starting to appear in Google Drive, people have started wondering whether the auto-backup function on mobile devices will also move from the Google+ app to the Google Drive app. After all, after reading Google’s own support site, it appears that Google is content to let the photos reside in both Google+ and Google Drive – in other words, it doesn’t seem to be forcing people off of Google+ completely for photo backup and storage.

However, according to Google Drive’s own app description in the iTunes App Store, it appears that Google Drive will, after all, take over the backup function very soon:

What’s New in Version 3.5.0

  • Auto Backup photos and videos from your Camera Roll (rolling out over the next few weeks)
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements

This isn’t the first time Google has released a really cool feature for iOS users before Android: does anyone remember the whole Hangouts dialer fiasco?

In any case, this is coming to Android soon. Hopefully sometime this year.
