A while back we were contacted by our new hosts at Skystra asking why there was such high sustained usage for the site. Pocketables doesn’t have a lot of visitors in a relative way and really should not be particularly a heavy burden on any server. Skystra had done the move from a set of backups onto their web server after Site5 deleted all of Pocketable’s backups.

To those ends we disabled this, that, the other, and the only thing that appeared odd was a known indexing bot was hitting the site a lot more than normal.

Skystra blocked the bot, we made some other changes, and I was told things were going pretty good. Evidently they weren’t.

SSHing into the account I see things like this

This one has 18% CPU, it’s usually nothing

Very high load averages, individual threads of lsphp popping up every now and then showing between 8 & 20% cpu usage for a second – can be triggered when I load a page that isn’t cached by Cloudflare. Most of the time I’m seeing nothing other than top, bash, and a 0% CPU lsphp.

So we’re at the point I’m looking at having to move Pocketables again as we’re using 37% of their resources and I have zero ability to see what’s going on. Pocketables doesn’t make enough money to pay for a VPS and the Skystra techs I’ve emailed with don’t seem to be able to track down what’s going on.

Any suggestions on finding out what’s going on please drop me a line, or if you’re a hosting company that thinks they can handle it the site really should not generate a load of more than a couple thousand PHP pages created a day.

So yeah, if TOP is telling me there’s nothing much popping up but the load average is high where do I go from there?

The strange attempt to nationalize or destroy the TikTok app appears to be blocked, at least temporarily. Judge Carl Nichols of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia granted an injunction. This doesn’t stop the November 12th ban, but does give a couple of more weeks of fighting to either make a deal and nationalize it somewhat, or show there’s no cause for the ban.

While the TikTok app is an abhorrent security risk just from what researchers have disclosed (app allowing remote control, root code in play, ability to download and execute third party code, etc) the ban does not appear to be based on that but that the app could theoretically send sensitive data back to China.

I mean, you’ve got more than enough reason to ban it as a security threat just from what researchers have disclosed and then go after a remote possibility. That’s just odd.

26 months on Ryobi 40v Battery tools by Paul E King first appeared on Pocketables.

]]>
Let me preface this, I’m not making a dime off of this. Let me amend the preface and say there’s a possibility I’ll make a dime off this due to ad impressions but this is just what I’ve experienced and my suggestions if you’re looking at Ryobi tools at the Home Depot on online.

Back in July 2018 I got a Ryobi 40v electric mower. I was sick of every year being without a mower for some reason (spark plug dead, worm ate a filter, gas which was drained somehow wasn’t all the way drained, bad gas, starter line snapped, trolls,) and I did not like having gasoline around a house with two kids who might have inherited my pyromaniac tendencies (it’s out of my system since 10 or so but daaaaamn that I didn’t blow up my house is incredible).

What followed was a Ryobi chainsaw, which has been used during multiple storms to help clear roads, and most recently this week helping me finish up downing a dead 46-55 foot tall tree.

I needed another battery at one point and picked up a leaf/yard blower because at the time the blower plus battery was $7 more than the battery, even on Amazon. It’s got its use and actually for how much I thought blowers were crap in general, I was wrong.

My ancient weed whacker and hedge trimmer batteries were starting to go (Black and Decker) and once again pricing out batteries (and a repair the weed whacker needed,) Ryobi tools came out as the economical option.

TL;DR – most are great for home use, probably not for larger projects, battery is main limiting factor on mower and chainsaw.

So, here’re my thoughts on the following Ryobi products:

Mower

The mower came with a 5 amp hour battery, and a charger. 5 amps is about a fifth of a tank of gas if I were to guess. For my 0.3 acre lawn it is not enough and I find my average mows being somewhere around 8 amp hours. For me this is not a huge deal because I have an extra battery. My yard is not your yard, and it has many a hill.

Ryobi 20" self propelled battery powered lawn mower

For a flat yard, small, reasonable length grass, this is great. I use it also to mow a small property that some people requested I get during the height of the pandemic. It’s light, it works, it’s not however gas powered level so if you’re dealing with anything bad you’re going to eat through the batteries.

Overall for average use, I love it. For serious haven’t been able to touch the lawn in 3 weeks due to rain and now it’s a swamp – underpowered. I have broken out my old gas mower to finish what 9 amp hours couldn’t after monsoon season. Actually, last monsoon season (this year, 3 weeks of rain,) I blew through 18 amp hours over two days and still had to finish up with the gas mower.

Chainsaw

Power is great, battery life is what kills it. My dead tree out back I’m going to guess has taken 20 amp hours of battery to down it. This was due to the 16 inch thick core having to be sliced through multiple times, rather than just cutting some limbs (which has been most of the cutting during storms as trees generally don’t drop their trunks on the road).

Slightly newer model than I have

If you have enough batteries, it does deliver gas performance and it’s so light. You don’t have batteries to spare you’re going to be disappointed.

You’re also going to be disappointed in Home Depot, which this is their brand as a note, they’re the only store that carries these in store, when your chainsaw loses a nut or needs servicing they do not do it at their tool department. My first chainsaw broke a tensioner, they could not repair and swapped thankfully. The second lost one of the nuts and once again, tool repair could not help because they do not work on that… one guy measured the thing and located a not right nut but it works.

I had a lot of difficulty getting the chain tensioned right and I’ve never been quite sure but I think the bar might not like OEM chains (I guess it could be bent,) as when I tried changing them out with the same spec but different mfg chain it did not work. About to grab a replacement bar as two years has not been kind, and I’ll see.

Blower

I’ve got a slightly older blower than the models that are showing now. The new ones talk about how quiet they are. Mine is slightly quieter than a gas powered mower. I’ve got no complaints about it as it works as well, as long as I need it to, but it’s not quiet.

Does what it says, will run as long as I need it.

Wait, I do have complaints… there’s a trigger, this starts the blower, but if you want to go into turbo mode you have to press and hold a button on the top. This seems unnecessary and is annoying as it doesn’t appear to be for safety and I’m usually having to press it unless I want to stand there for a bit.

Also the air intake is on the side, so when you’re getting tired and not wanting to hold it out it’s going to pull your clothes right in or just slow down because you’re now a human cork.

Hedge trimmer

Advertises gas-like power, delivered. Dealt with my hedge from hell in about 6 minutes as opposed to my normal 40 with my old underpowered B&D trimmer – I say underpowered as it was really really old, early battery tech, I am not casting aspersions on Black and Decker products, just this old one is done. I think it’s somewhere around 15 years old at this point and the batteries never seemed particularly strong back then.

Works, does what it advertises, seems to be a merchant of death. Main complaint is no way to easily hang/store it that I see.

Line string trimmer / weed whacker

As mentioned this was less expensive for this plus a 4 amp hour battery than it was for the battery alone. It whacks weeds well, my yard I’ve never pulled more than one amp hour of battery off of it so I think we’re looking at something that might be a pro level unit. Powerful enough to handle things the old B&D whacker would not.

One thing I’m annoyed at with it is either I’ve assembled something wrong or the guard is not positioned well enough to stop all the grass from flying straight back at me. My left foot ends up covered. Seems like 2 more inches of plastic and it’d be fine.

One of the other things I’ve been doing with these is charging via the sun using a Jackery battery and solar panel. I can think of very very few use cases where this makes sense other than if you’re a reviewer and happen to have all this tech in your house, but it’s somewhat amusing.

Everything above has had what I consider average person use with the exception of the chainsaw, which has had significantly more use than expected due to a tornado, 3 instances of straight line winds downing the city, the very large dead tree I just downed, loaning it out a couple of times. Several random uses. I’ve sharpened the original chain many many many times.

Amazon Prime day was delayed, it’s now scheduled for the 902nd anniversary of the original Friday the 13th, and my wife’s birthday, so you know, good luck with that.

Amazon does have a support small business portal in which if you spend $10 with a small business you get a $10 credit. So there’s that. Other than that it’ll be a sale.

Here’s the details on Prime Day should you wish to see them, they’ll be being updated all Prime days long. Here’s the link if you don’t want us to make any commission off of purchases.

Because you wanted the shape of a crystal ball and the ability of a child to order services that cost you money right out of the gate, Amazon has reengineered the Alexa-powered Echo Dot into what vaguely looks like a shipping container for a silicon breast implant, or a PR kit for a really unimpressive set of tire monitors.

As a note, I didn’t come up with Amazballs, that’s all Mat.

There are a couple of versions of the 4g, different colors, a clock that’s under the cloth, and of course a kids edition that’s a tiger because… um, Echo Dots and Amazon are known for tigers?

Google says no, but then as a competitor of Amazon, perhaps they have reasons to present the truth.

My guess is the things will sound extremely good, I’ve been impressed with the third generation Dot (although I’m all in for Google it’s nice to listen to the news and a couple of podcasts on the Dot.)

The kids edition it should be noted will eventually start charging you a monthly fee if you want to keep some of the things it comes with (such as audiobooks, interactive games, etc) so prepare to shell out either $35.88 a year + tax for the service, or $59.99 for a replacement or additional tiger every year that will come with yet another year of Freetime.

Release date is October 22, 2020 and if you think that date looks strangely ominous let me know why… I’ve been staring at it and all I can figure out is if you take the two O’s in October it’s 2o2o 2020 and some letters left over… maybe the 2020…

My guess is they’ll be at people’s houses the day of release as opposed to later, but who knows.

There’s also a panda.

In theory clicking/tapping/licking on any of the Amazballs should take you to Amazon to find them. They’re tagged with a Pocketables commission link so if you don’t want us to make any income just go to Amazon and search by yourself. Also if you’re there try and remember to change the URL on anything from www to SMILE so that the charities you want to support get supported.

Amazon’s new cloud streaming gaming service was announced earlier today and it’s Stadia all over again, but Amazon branded. Their slogan is great games any time, anywhere. Twitch integration is mentioned where you can watch and then just join in without putting a quarter on a console.

Amazon Luna Logo

Hopefully the service will work better than Stadia did for me, however to be fair trying that out during a pandemic it was almost unusable and the gaming selection was meh, so perhaps even today Stadia’s useable, but it really burned me for cloud gaming.

Amazon Luna controller

The controller appears to be basically an XBOX controller with an additional button in the center. So nothing particularly groundbreaking. It’s the XBOX plus One button and it looks like maybe some T-Mobile colors.

Amazon Luna controller
There are no pictures of the other side of this but I’d assume pull triggers and bumpers like everything else

I’m not going to put it down, but I’ll let the world be the guinea pigs on it this time as I was severely disappointed by lag, delays, and a service where I could legitimately scream “lag” and not be lying.

Starting today, customers in the U.S. can request an invitation for early access and help shape the future of gaming on Luna

Luna Controller with Cloud Direct technology provides low latency control and effortless play across screens

Ubisoft game channel gives players access to new titles the same day they release

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 24, 2020– Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN)—Starting today, customers in the U.S. can request early access to Amazon Luna, a new cloud gaming service designed for instant play. With Luna and the incredible scale and capability of Amazon Web Services (AWS), it’s easy to stream high-quality, immersive games. Players can enjoy Luna games on their favorite devices without lengthy downloads or updates, expensive hardware or complicated configuration. They can even start playing on one screen and seamlessly pick up and continue on another. At launch, Luna will be available on Fire TV, PC, and Mac as well as on web apps for iPhone and iPad, with Android coming soon.

“We created Luna to make it easy to play great games on the devices customers already own and love,” said Marc Whitten, Vice President, Amazon Entertainment Devices and Services. “It’s Day One for Luna—we are excited to work with gamers, streamers, and publishers like Ubisoft and Remedy Entertainment to build a great gaming experience for everyone.”

Great Games, Anywhere You Want to Play

Players can subscribe to the Luna+ game channel, which offers a growing library of games to play on Fire TV, PC, and Mac, or through web apps on iOS, with Android coming soon. During early access, Luna+ will include action games like Resident Evil 7Control, and Panzer Dragoon; adventure games like A Plague Tale: Innocence and The Surge 2; platformers like Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair and Iconoclasts; and fan favorites like GRIDABZU and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Luna+ will be offered at an introductory price of $5.99/month during the early access period, with more titles to be added over time. Additionally, Luna+ subscribers can play on two devices simultaneously and get resolutions of 4K/60fps for select titles.

Amazon also announced a new gaming channel with leading global video game publisher Ubisoft, available directly through Luna. Players who subscribe to this channel will have access to their favorite Ubisoft titles in up to 4K resolution, mobile gameplay, and access to new titles when the channel launches like Assassins Creed ValhallaFar Cry 6, and Immortals Fenyx Rising the same day they release. This is the first of multiple Luna game channels in development, where customers can play games from their favorite publishers and genres.

“We’re proud to be working alongside Amazon on Luna, utilizing the power of cloud gaming to provide our players with another way to access our games, wherever they are,” said Chris Early, SVP of Partnerships and Revenue, Ubisoft. “Ubisoft’s channel on Luna will allow players to experience our new releases along with many of our catalog games, while enjoying player-friendly features like Alexa and Twitch integrations.”

Play from Twitch

Gaming is more social than ever before and Twitch is where the world’s best streamers meet the world’s most engaged gaming community. Twitch is one of the most important ways that audiences discover great games and experiences, and we think cloud streaming can make that kind of discovery even easier. Inside the Luna experience, players will see Twitch streams for games in the service, and from Twitch, they’ll be able to instantly start playing Luna games.

Amazon Luna Controller Delivers Low Latency with Cloud Direct Technology

Customers can play Luna with a keyboard and mouse, a Bluetooth game controller, or the new Luna Controller with Cloud Direct technology. Luna Controller is Alexa-enabled and connects directly to the cloud to effortlessly control your game, featuring a multiple-antenna design that prioritizes un-interrupted wifi for lower latency gaming. In fact, our testing showed a reduction in roundtrip latency when playing Luna Controller with Cloud Direct vs. Luna Controller via Bluetooth, with reductions of between 17 to 30 milliseconds among PC, Fire TV, and Mac. Because the Luna Controller connects directly to cloud servers, players can easily switch between screens—such as Fire TV to mobile phone—without additional pairing or configuration changes. Luna Controller is available at an introductory price of $49.99 during the early access period.

Powered by AWS Game Servers

Luna is built on AWS and harnesses the power of the industry’s broadest and deepest cloud platform. What’s more, as new features and content are added for Luna customers, the backend tech that’s driving it all will also be frequently refreshed, ensuring a consistently improving experience whether they’re playing on their Fire TV, their phone, or anywhere else.

Availability

Customers in the U.S. can request an invitation today for early access to Luna. By choosing to participate, invited gamers will have the opportunity to contribute feedback that will inform future Luna features and development. Request an invitation to Luna today at http://amazon.com/Luna/.

At launch, Luna will be available on Fire TV, PC, and Mac as well as on web apps for iPhone and iPad, with Android coming soon.

Special thanks for the tip BrianD, and the source Android Police, that Amazon and Best Buy have a sale going on the Nest Cam indoor 3-pack for just $299. This is an $89 savings over the normal price, and was enough to make me bat an eye, but I ended up going for the even lower price of $254.99 because I’m honestly tired of the 5 & 7 year old blaming each other for who brought the toys out.

Price on the Google store

This deal is accomplished with the Wikibuy plugin for Chrome, and it claimed I could save about $50 off of the nearly $90 savings already. Hrmm, checked, and yup – through the WikiBuy link found a retail shop with a fairly long history selling it for less.

Now, this is not really a testimonial to Wikibuy, it’s been extremely wrong before in pricing, but if you’re looking for a Nest Cam indoor unit might want to slap on the Wikibuy extension (or hit their website, here’s the links to the Nest cameras,) and have a go at it. I’ve not been disappointed with any purchase through them, so yeah…

And if you don’t want to trust Wikibuy, that Amazon price is a pretty good deal. The Wikibuy calculations will be based on your local tax rate, so savings may differ.

As expected the presale of the new XBOX Series systems resulted in a fairly quick tsunami of ordering frenzy to be the first to get the new gaming powerhouse. I checked all the listed sources and all were sold out except Amazon, which has been showing me the lovely dogs of Amazon all day.

Clancy, you’re a raucous little mutt aren’t you? I bet your owner gets you an XBOX Series S.

Anyway, should you really really need one of these of course the botstorm that followed ordering these ended up posting them on eBay where the top one is asking just under 50 times asking price, although to be fair that one does claim to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

This generation of XBOX (and PlayStation,) is possibly the least excited I’ve been about a gaming system – this is either because I’m old now, or perhaps since I got a semi-decent graphics card for my PC. Or perhaps it’s just the launch titles aren’t jumping out at me.

I’ll wait.

The next big thing in gaming is coming out on the Microsoft and Sony fronts, but tomorrow is Microsoft’s day. Tuesday starts the pre-order madness, or lack thereof. Evidently the PS5 went on presale and presold out.

If you’re in the United States, preorders start at 8AM PT, 9AM Mtn, 10AM CST, 11AM EST. Forbes says it’ll be available at the Microsoft Store, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, Newegg, and other participating retailers.

XBOX Series X outdoors for cooling

If you’re navigating over at Amazon beware as searching for the XBOX Series anything will currently link you to $500 units of the previous generation.

While the preorders start on the 22nd, the official ship date (according to CNET) will be November 10th.

The XBOX Series X & S appear to be more than powerful enough to handle yet another Halo game.

TikTok users in the United States are one step closer to having a platform that’s not banned, and also being People of Walmart without even lifting a finger as CNN is reporting that there was a tentative deal reached over the weekend.

The ban would be lifted if an American company takes control of the US operations as presumably the country that allows Facebook to operate like it does is less of a threat to user privacy.

If the deal goes through a company called TikTok Global would be formed with the US companies having a 20% interest and allowed to review the app’s source code, but not own or port or use it in any way. Oracle would handle the cloud logistics and storing user data in the United States, and Walmart would probably get discounted advertising to a generation that doesn’t like Walmart.

The deal still hinges on getting Trump’s final approval because of course it does.

Last weekend we went to a state park and took everything (I’d hoped for camping but whatever.) I mean we’re talking six hundred pounds of drinks, food, clothing, tech, and we were everything wrong with the idea of going into a dark skies park to look at the stars. What we didn’t bring was a Bluetooth speaker, or any sort of speaker options, and after the kids went to bed (cabin, awesome, not camping) on a hot night in a state park with a burn ban looking at the stars, we wanted some music.

Oven amp

TL;DR – look at the picture, grab one of those and see if it works for you – kitchen claw from Dollar General we think.

I had my phone with me, and on that phone I had some FLACs I use for audio testing but man, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is not spectacular in the music playing arena and as such it sounded like a quiet, tinny beast as I tried getting some of my favorite (and only, there was no cell signal,) music to play.

Inspired by a story from a Steve Jobs book, I looked around for something I could use as a natural amplifier, didn’t see anything, and ended up sticking my phone while playing into the above kitchen-claw just to set it somewhere. Lo and behold, silicone kitchen claw brought the amp.

Also evidently crows like David Bowie’s older music, but that’s unrelated.

 1. Any provision of internet hosting services enabling the functioning or optimization of the mobile application in the U.S.;

The deals with Microsoft and Oracle came to no mutually agreeable outcome, so TikTok’s going away.

TikTok was widely touted as the reason for lack of attendance at Trump’s Oklahoma Rally on June 20 as millions of TikTok users got free tickets, 47 days later executive order was given to shut it down.

You can read the full statement at the Department of Commerce

TikTok is still available on the Play Store at the moment should you wish to potentially give all your data away / have one last hurrah before it goes away. That said, the app does have some really troubling stuff so there are more reasons than potentially bruised ego of Trump with this thing.

If you’ve ever done any product photography or professional video, you’ve probably run into the requirements of a lighting setup and plenty of space, and if you’re like me you find you have neither because two tiny humans have taken over every square inch of your property.

The Sandmarc Bi-Color Edition is a portable lighting source that packs a 3000mAh battery and lets you adjust lighting temperatures between 3000K and 6500K with a smart knob/adjuster at up to 1500 Lux. It also fits right into your pocket for easy travel gear, and can be held wherever you need it for the perfect lighting situation.

The Sandmarc Prolight Bi-Color weighs less than most phones, so bringing it along with your gear isn’t particularly cumbersome, and the 3000mAh battery can last for about an hour and a half at full intensity so, at least for the lighting requirements I have it works well. It can also be charged with any USB source (USB-C connector,) so if you’re using this in the wild you can solar power your lights later in the night if you’ve got a panel.

I’ve reviewed a similar less expensive but wired product before, and I can say this is significantly more pocketable, portable, and a little cooler overall, although it’s also about 4x the price. So if your shots are not going to be more than 6 feet away from a wall outlet this might be a bit of overkill for you.

The portability of the thing and being able to operate with no wires though ended up having this come along with us on a camping trip this past weekend and got some use on a trail (well lit, but horrible photo missing).

The Sandmarc Prolight Bi-Color can screw into their film rigs and poles with an included screw. It does not seem to want to mount with the equipment I’ve got, but I don’t have a lot of pro tripod / camera gear since someone liberated it from my car a few years back.

I’d say hopefully look to my product photography in the future to see how well this works, it was used in the GoCube review so far (lighting in the middle of the night in a room with horrid lighting)

The Google Home app was updated yesterday and along with it we learned that Android TV is being rebranded as Google TV. Actually we’ve suspected that since May but it’s showing in some of the updates now.

Relax, Chromecast isn’t being renamed… yet.

If you’re not clear on the naming conventions, which I admit I wasn’t, Android TV is a version of the Android operating system designed to play on displays such as a TV, and generally goes with a remote. Most of the apps for Android TV receive streaming content, and if your child didn’t lose your only NVIDIA Shield remote, it’s a great experience.

Side note, if there’s anyone at NVIDIA who might want to talk to us about reviewing one of their … nevermind…

YouTube TV is a product that Google produces that streams content to you.

So, in the future you will say Google TV runs a TV modified version of Android, was Android TV which ran/runs YouTube TV, which is owned by Google; but YouTube on Google TV is not YouTube TV even though it’s YouTube on a TV through Google TV. The thing that provides the Google TV will most likely not be a Google product, but if it is it’ll be the one that plugs into the TV that’s currently named as a combination of fishing and a browser codenamed after a feature of 1950’s cars.

Something I should have been good at as a child was Rubik’s cubes. I was not. I didn’t discover until years later that part of the reason these were so flipping hard for me was I was colorblind and as such I never really discovered naturally how to transition pieces into the right places as I’d end up discovering I had red and orange mixed up, or yellow and orange, or yellow and green.

GoCube

I disassembled my couple of cubes many times to put them back because I usually could never get them back using my own skills. As a low-rate colorblind cube user I never really learned anything from it.

Many many years later and knowing I’m colorblind, I know if I want to play with a Rubik’s cube style toy I’m looking at sitting under very good lighting, and my adult brain never developed the neuro pathways that told me this, that, this and spin and you’re there. That’s OK though as they’ve got some really great tutorials that walk you through where you cube is currently, and how you go about solving each particular style of transition.

More than that if you’re just wanting to play with a cube, or know how to solve it from where you’re at, you can get straight instructions on what to turn to reset things to normal. Don’t want the connected part or just want to play with a cube? Don’t use the app.

The instructional videos combine with where you’re currently at in the real cube world, and if you mess up it can walk you through returning the cube to the proper position for the lesson. As I’ve messed up a lot I’ve become quite familiar with returning the cube to a learning position.

The academy is supposedly a one hour class. Being colorblind may increase this for some (did me.) I confess I’m over an hour in at the moment and need to repeat a class because I made the mistake of trying to do this in an un-lit area and my orange and red game were not on par.

GoCube

Oh, what’s really cool about the connected side is the cube and what’s on your screen match. You rotate the cube slightly to the left in the real world, it rotates to the left on the screen. Throw it into the air and it lands in your hand green side down, white pointing at you? Same on the screen.

The GoCube comes with a carrying bag, a stand charger (if you want it,) and a proprietary easy-plug in cable. I don’t know what the battery life is on this thing, they list 60+ hours of play time but I don’t know if that’s a charge or the expected amount of time the average person will actually play with the thing their entire use of it.

GoCube
I may be doing something wrong here but it just hates me in the stand. Fine without it.

The only thing with this I have not been blown away by was the stand. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or what but it doesn’t like charging consistently when it’s in there.

Anyway, I don’t know if I’ve expressed this well, but this little GoCube brings me glee as a non-kid that I can learn what I couldn’t back when I had time to learn on my own, and although I’m still not particularly good at it I can solve and start over without the need to disassemble the cube.

You can grab a GoCube on Amazon.

This is just a list of what happened today and might help someone out with a headache. (Also something I can post to actually do a test on the site)

Yesterday I got an email from our hosting provider Skystra that we were using 96% of our storage space. A 20 year old site, 25,000 images, yeah that sounded about right. I did what any techie would do and decided to run an image optimizer on 25K images and watched as it went through each one reducing some of those old JPEGs from 200 K to about 50, and creating 4-8K webp images. Life appeared sweet.

At the end of the day I logged into the Skystra portal and it showed we had about 7% space free now, things looked like they were going in the right direction.

I got a message this morning that email didn’t work for one of the authors here. Odd… also noticed several of the images that would have been webp’d (the last 6 or so) were not showing up. Odd.

https://www.pocketables.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/RVD_2ndGen_-VenetianBronze1-800×445.jpg would display, but https://www.pocketables.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/RVD_2ndGen_-VenetianBronze1-800×445.jpg.webp would not in spite of being in the directory, and looking fine when I looked at it.

A rewrite rule somewhere I suspect. That or an ownership rule for the file which I haven’t jumped into yet.

Skystra got back to me pretty quickly. Their dashboard was lying to me, I was around a gig over the limit. Not sure where or why still but that was the case. As to why the webp conversions are showing blank, no idea. I had to disable lightspeed cache and ewww image optimizer to even get anything to work again.

A few more emails to them and I was told to restore my site from last night, but the problem here is I lose 4 articles from yesterday if I restore from prior to hitting the optimize button.

Disabled enough stuff that bad webp is not a problem at the moment, we’ll see what happens from here.

Decided to nuke all the webp files – couldn’t see any reason why the rewrite rules were selectively not allowing me to get some of the webp content – as a note, it was only some of the webp content that was made last night wasn’t working… other file sizes seemed to be fine… weird times… I checked, the owner and file permissions were right, you could download the file and it worked with the host file manager… it was weird.

deleted all the webp files via shell

find . -name "*.webp" -type f -delete

Don’t try that at home kids…

Reenabled things and re-webp’d an image or two and things appear to be working…

Those no-touch devices, keys, and pressing really fast because covid is slow (not really kiddos,) have started taking their toll on some smart doorbells that were never designed for metal objects to poke them to activate the doorbell according to ZDNet.

Also, once again to the 7-year-olds, you can’t out-press the virus.

Anyway, if you’re using keys, pressers, etc, be gentle. Also stop licking the doorbells, it’s even less healthy now.

Yet another idea free idea – identifying stolen vehicles, vehicles with replaced plates by Paul E King first appeared on Pocketables.

]]>
A year ago I ran for the 16th District council position in Nashville (no, I’m not that person currently in the news.) One of the things that seemed like a good idea during that run was to go through the Citizen’s Police Academy and actually learn what needs one of the branches of government I would be in communication with on a regular basis had, and what challenges they faced.

TL;DR – idea for fingerprinting a car using TPMS rather than relying on license plate info.

One of the things that stuck out at me was a course we had on stolen vehicles. Thief steals a car, drives around and finds another car that looks just like it, swaps plates, and chances are that the person who’s plates have been swapped will never notice the swap until they get talked to by officers (possibly at gunpoint,) because it looks to police like they’re driving a stolen vehicle.

If you’re dealing with a professional, they’re going to have found and disabled LoJack or any satellite trackers pretty quickly. You can purchase signal jammers fairly inexpensively (totally illegal but they’re cheap,) so that you can get the vehicle wherever you want and at your leisure extract the tracking stuff.

That said, most stolen cars are not stolen by professionals, they’re stolen out of driveways and parking lots because people left their keys inside, left the cars running, or otherwise made the vehicle a very easy target. They’re driven around, abused and abandoned eventually without an international spy cartel somehow involved.

I read a story about a guy who had that happen (the removal of the LoJack,) and just happened to have a TYLE sitting in his trunk. Someone walked by, picked up the TYLE beacon, and he and police converged on his now-abandoned car and retrieved it. Now, these BTLE trackers are useful, but they rely on a battery, and someone running the app happening to walk by and be within range for enough time (you probably would not pick up someone driving past you).

But what about other signals your car makes? We learned from the Sense Energy Monitor that everything in your house has a pretty unique signal … probably not… TPMS sensors however have been jumping around in my head for a while.

A TPMS is a small little wireless device that’s in most people’s tires these days that tells a receiver in your car when your air pressure is too low or too high. The TPMS transmits a serial number, and a notification whether things are good or bad. The notification is able to be picked up by a receiver 10 feet or more away in the engine compartment.

As your car rolls along imagine four little TPMS sensors broadcasting unique (enough,) serial numbers and pressure indication several times a second for all the world to hear. Because they do. So how hard is it to turn TPMS data that your tires are transmitting into usable data? Not particularly.

You’d build a database in a couple of phases probably – identification phase in which you’ve got an internet connected $30 Raspberry Pi, a TPMS reader, a $50 plate cam, and some MTN Dew for your programmer.

Set the device out at a busy road, car drives by, TPMS sniffed, plate captured and tagged in a database with all the TPMS sensor data your little internet connected box can hear. After a few runs by different equipment and some outlier sorting you’ve probably narrowed it down to the TPMS sensors just on that car and not the others nearby.

What’s that good for? You’ve now got a fingerprint of cars and their associated license plates. The license plate passes with a different fingerprint you’ve potentially got a plate swap, or four new tires and $240 worth of TPMS sensors thrown in (mine have generally been reused.) As this is just a cheap computer that could be solar powered easily set it and forget it and build a mass database.

You can disable a tracker pretty easily, but your average car thief is not going to be disabling TPMS sensors, stealing tires to change the fingerprint, etc. They wanted a vehicle with the least effort possible.

Now when a car is stolen, police would look up the plate, see if there’s sensor data in a TPMS database, and see where the last $100 monitoring device heard the TPMS signals that matched the car and what plate it has on it at the moment.
